Are you a registered Mental Health Nurse/professional looking for a new and exciting role? We have a new innovative opportunity that has arisen for an experienced and passionate registered Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) practitioner at Band 6 capacity.

As part of the North West London CAMHS Transformation, CNWL CAMHS is continuing to develop a 24hr crisis care pathway aimed at supporting Children and Young People including those with a learning disability, presenting with an acute mental health crisis.

We are looking for a motivated and skilled mental health professional with an experience of working in CAMHS Psychiatric Liaison Service/Crisis team to provide face to face A&E Liaison and psychiatric assessment at four local hospitals, risk assessment and also review young people whilst also working in partnership with families.

You will be passionate about providing a crisis responsive service to young people presenting in mental health crisis in A&E and able to work with both internal and external stakeholders. 

Main duties of the job

The role will involve the comprehensive assessment of young people with mental health needs (including risk assessment and the development of risk management plans) who present to A&Es, or other children’s settings out of hours  

The shift pattern for this post will be primarily out of normal working hours covering from 4pm to midnight and from 8pm to 8:30am for night shifts and long days at weekends/bank holidays from 8am to 8:30pm.

As a member of the “Out of Hours” (OOH) Team, you will be expected to assess patients from a wide variety of sources including:

  • The Emergency Departments of local hospitals, 136 suites
  • All Paediatric wards in hospitals serving Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, Brent, Harrow, and Hillingdon
  • All other Acute Medicine and General Surgery Wards where children may be placed. 

Patients may present with emotional distress, self-harm, mental health crisis, or the psychological consequences of acute or chronic physical health problems. You will be expected to have the skills to deal with a very broad range of mental health needs as well as undertaking initial psychiatric assessments.

Duty SHIFTS as follows:

Monday-Friday: TWILIGHTs (16:00-midnight), NIGHTs (20:00-0830am)

Week-ends and Bank Holidays: Long Day (08:00am-20:30)  NIGHTs (20:00-08:30am)

9-5 = training day and time spent in in-hours CAMHS services (7.5 hours plus 30 mins break).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide, full mental state examination in an acute hospital setting. To act as a role model, resource provider and teacher to colleagues who will not have a full awareness of mental health problems. To further develop your own clinical, managerial and audit/research skills. 
  • Be responsible for the full autonomous assessment of the mental health needs of young people presenting with a wide variety of clinical conditions. Following this, the post-holder will be responsible for development, implementation and evaluation of immediate programmes of care (including full referral to statutory agencies). 
  • The postholder will need to be skilled in the consideration of Child Safeguarding issues and be able to act effectively in assessing and managing risk including effective liaison with social care services 
  • Provide a comprehensive consultation liaison service to Paediatric ward teams and individual clinicians to advise in the development of psychological care plans, and to advise in cases where patients are exhibiting complex psychosocial needs and/or challenging behaviours. 
  • Be required to teach a variety of other staff e.g., hospital administration staff, security personnel, student mental health nurses, RSCN’s, medical students, Emergency Department SHO’s. Teaching will be provided in both formal and informal settings. 
  • Be responsible for providing a broad range of treatments and clinical interventions as appropriate to the needs of each individual patient. 
  •  Be responsible for specific clinical and managerial projects as negotiated with the Team Manager/Lead Nurse and undertake all necessary work to complete these, including facilitating meetings, liaising and or negotiating with other staff. 
  •  Be expected to participate fully in quality assurance initiatives, and clinical governance, with particular emphasis on patient first approach. 
  • The post-holder will act as a role model in providing a service for young people with mental health problems in a variety of community settings. 
  • The post-holder will initiate and participate in audit research projects (as negotiated with the Lead Nurse for CAMHS services) associated with the work of the service. 
  • You may be required to take on a range of non-clinical management duties at the request of, and after discussion with the Team Manager/Lead Nurse 
  • You may be required to deputise, (in accordance with your level of seniority and experience) in the absence of, and after discussion with the Team Manager/Lead Nurse.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Relevant Professional Qualification i.e. RMN, OT, SW and Psychologist with current registration
  • Post registration training in therapeutic skills/CAMHS work
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of assessing and managing crisis with those with a severe mental illness
  • Experience of implementing and monitoring standards of care
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of mental health disorders as well as their relationship to physical disorders
  • Knowledge of Mental Capacity Act (1983 & 2005)
