Job overview

This post will be based in the Department of Neonatology, Homerton Hospital site. This is a 6 PA locum post arising due to temporary leave of one consultant. The successful appointee will join the existing team of 16 (14.5 WTE) consultants. The appointee would be expected to deliver at least 4.8 PAs of direct clinical care (DCC) activity and will have PA for supporting professional activities (SPA) such as teaching and training, management, audit and governance.

 

Main duties of the job

DCC activities will include attending cover for the various areas of the service including NICU, SCBU, and Consultant cover for Labour Ward, TC and Postnatal Wards. Out-patient clinics are currently led by the consultant covering PNW. The postholder will participate in the on-call and weekend Consultant rota fully. 

The key expectations from the post-holder are as below: 

    • The provision of a first-class service
    • Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
    • Active involvement in undergraduate and post graduate teaching and training
    • Undertaking all work in accordance with Trust policies and procedures including the code of behaviour
    • Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of Homerton’s business plans
    • Contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development

Working for our organisation

As one of London’s designated perinatal centres, HUH provides a highly specialised range of obstetric and neonatal services. We currently accommodate around 6000 deliveries per year and have a 46 cot tertiary neonatal unit.

 Over 3500 staff are directly employed by the trust, with a further 1000 contracted to work for us or placed here for training. In the latter group are pre and post registration medical and health care professional trainees from the London Deanery (HEE), Bart's and the London Medical School, City University London, and East London University.

Homerton University Hospital was rated outstanding by CQC in 2020.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching within the Unit and Hospital. The Unit participates in the rolling programme for neonatal grid trainees in London, Oxford and Cambridge by organising a day-long teaching event, once every 2 years. Recently these have been virtual sessions given over a designated month.

The postholder will be expected to take an active role in the wider management aspects of the Division and the Hospital as a whole, including involvement in contracting service specifications and quality specifications, where appropriate.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent training in neonatal medicine to fulfil syllabus/ competency requirements as published by the RCPCH.
  • Full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree

Experience and expertise

Essential criteria
  • Current NLS, APLS or EPALS certificate
  • Level 3 safeguarding children training

Clinical skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced clinical skills in neonatal medicine

Teaching & training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Research

Essential criteria
  • Enthusiasm for research & willingness to contribute to the research activities of the department
