Job overview

This is a new Consultant post.  The remit of the post holder will be to work within the multi–disciplinary team providing Occupational Health services to the Trust’s staff.  In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group, whilst maintaining a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job

This Consultant post is a crucial and pivotal Occupational Health medical role to ensure we sustain our Trust legal and ethical obligation to maintain staff occupational health and safety, staff wellbeing at work, staff recruitment and good performance and work attendance for staff living with health conditions. In addition you will provide Occupational Health medical leadership to the Occupational Health MDT and wider Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.     The post holder will, together with the Head of Nursing/General Manager (HoN/GM) and Consultant colleague, be responsible for the provision of a proactive Occupational Health service to King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

2.     Maintain the highest clinical and professional standard in the practice of Occupational Medicine.

3.     To provide a leading role in the delivery of Occupational Health services including the identification of the need for medical examination of new employees, immunisations screening for employees at special risk, statutory medical examinations and clinical assessments for fitness to work, ensuring Trust compliance with the Equality Act (2010) and other legal and ethical obligations.

4.     To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. Primarily but not exclusively to provide clinical leadership to junior medical and nursing staff within OH. Candidates will be encouraged to have academic interest.

5.     To assist the Senior team to review commercial opportunities available to the Service and the business models best suited to maximise them. Assist the managerial team to develop businesses cases to achieve additional investment needed to realise the full potential of the service.

6.     Determine suitability for III Health Retirement in line with the NHS Pensions Agency.

7.     Actively contribute to and influence the formulation of strategic management of staff health, safety and welfare issues to enable the provision of a safer, healthier environment for staff patients and visitors

8.     Contribute to the design and development of Occupational Health services ensuring that Occupational Health services and products are benchmarked and continuously improved to enhance their value to partners.

9.     Contribute to improving staff performance, motivation and morale and also the reduction of potential litigation by collaborating with managers to provide a healthy and safe working environment.

10.  To work co-operatively with other hospital and medical staff, to improve the standards of workplace health within the Trust.

11.  Investigate where required possible work-related ill health issues in collaboration with the Employee Relations, Line managers, H and S representatives, Staff Side representatives, employees and where required, Health and Safety Executive.

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice and entry on the Specialist Register as an Occupational Medicine Specialist or within 6 months of CTT
  • Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registerable medical qualification Membership of the faculty of Occupational Medicine (MFOM) Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
  • Evidence of understanding of the role of clinical management
  • Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of ‘Good Medical Practice’ set out by the general medical council Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and risk management
  • Full MRCP

Interview Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • On the day of interview applicants must be within 6 months of CCT or must have fully completed CESR application and be fully registered on the GMC Specialist Register

Training and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide experience in all aspects of Occupational Health, culminating in award of Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC, or award of Certificate of Eligibility for Specialty Registration (CESR) by GMC.
  • Experience in occupational health assessments and report preparation (e.g. Fitness for Work; Health Surveillance; Ill Health Retirement etc

Audit and Quality Improvement

Essential criteria
  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit
  • Must have undertaken and completed audit projects
Desirable criteria
  • Audit Publications

Research and Publications

Essential criteria
  • Experience of clinical research
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports
