Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Night Worker

Band 6

North West London Pathology (NWLP) is an NHS pathology partnership joint venture between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. NWLP is modelled as a shared services organisation jointly owned by the three Trusts. The organisation is hosted by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and as the legal entity for NWLP our staff are employed by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

NWLP is based on a ‘hub and spoke’ structure; the majority of routine, specialist and non-urgent activity is centralised at our hub site at Charing Cross Hospital. Urgent tests required for immediate patient management and treatment are performed in 24/7 Essential Service Laboratories based on-site within the seven hospital sites in the group.

The partnership has created an innovative and sustainable service that delivers outstanding quality to users and patients alike. This innovative approach allows the service to better manage demand, standardise operations, improve value for money and make use of state-of-the-art technology.

Our values are to be patient-focused, collaborative, expert and caring.

Job overview

As a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist you will work as a member of the night worker team to a set pattern covering Haematology and Blood Transfusion at SMH.

An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic band 6 Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and dedicated Haematology and Blood Transfusion night worker team, within Blood Sciences, at St Mary’s Hospital.

The successful applicant is required to have relevant, specialist-level, discipline-specific knowledge and experience, and will participate in the laboratory rotation through the core sections of Automated Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion, and will receive additional training so as to provide out of hours urgent special haematology tests. Our busy department is fully computerised (Sunquest and Telepath). The Pathology department utilises the Q-Pulse Quality Management System.

We would like to hear from you if you have the relevant experience and qualifications. Applications are welcomed from self-motivating individuals who are currently registered with the HCPC, and with sufficient post-registration experience in the relevant disciplines.  Applicants must have a desire to pro-actively learn and develop within our busy laboratories.

Main duties of the job

The Departments of Haematology and Blood Transfusion offer the opportunity to work in a well-equipped, open plan, spacious and modern environment with a high level of automation. You will be working with new, state of the art analysers including the Abbott Alinity h series, Stago Star Max, Alifax ESR analysers, Sebia Capillary Electrophoresis, Spectrophotometry, HPLC technology and IH1000 Blood Grouping analysers.  You will also have the opportunity to undertake blood film morphology examination across a wide range of both adult and paediatric cases from routine to complex.  St Mary’s Blood Sciences incudes the NWLP Special Haematology hub, which provides a wide range of both routine and high-level specialised haemoglobinopathy, enzymopathy and membranopathy tests.

The Blood Transfusion medicine laboratory supports the major trauma services delivered by St Mary’s as one of the London Major Trauma Centres and additionally provides support for complex obstetric, vascular, haemoglobinopathy and bone marrow transplant patients. St Mary’s haematology provides scientific and clinical support for complex and overseas morphology and haemoglobinopathy referral cases providing staff with the opportunity to develop in a wide range of interesting and specialised areas.
