Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a cancer nurse specialist to join the metastatic uro-oncology  service  at the Royal Free Hospital.  This is a new post  and is currently 6 month fixed term due to limited funding. The Metastatic Uro-oncology CNS is a key worker role that encompasses addressing  the  oncology patients’ health concerns and works to promote their health and wellbeing.  Using their skills and expertise in cancer care, the CNS provides physical and emotional support to their patients, coordinates their care services, and informs and advises them on clinical and practical issues associated with their illness.  This leads to a more positive outcome for patients.

The post will incorporate the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role dimensions of expert clinical practice, education, leadership, management and research.

Main duties of the job

 

The Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist will be required:  

  • To assist in the provision of professional and expert care of the patient with metastatic urological cancers, acting as a resource to provide information and support to patients, carers and staff.  

  • Develop knowledge base and clinical expertise in expected toxicities and late effects of urological cancer treatments. 

  • To provide expert nursing support before, during and when their treatment for cancer is complete. This will include outpatient visits and telephone advice and triage. 

  • To liaise effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to achieve a seamless specialist service.

  • To ensure that every patient has a plan of care and liase with MDT and other teams to ensure that this is not compromised 

  • To participate and contribute to the creation of patient information 

  • To provide formal and informal training and education within specialist area 

  • To attend the Cancer CNS Community of Practice. 

  • Support health and wellbeing events and initiatives to support patients to live with their disease  

  • To attend the  multidisciplinary meetings, contributing to discussion and acting as a patient advocate  

  • To ensure patients with complex needs are identified early.  

  •  Liaison with referring teams and ensuring care continuity

  • To provide holistic needs assessment and support/signposting to services and resources available.
