Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Assistant Psychologist to join a newly developed part of the specialist perinatal mental health service in SLAM. The NHS Long Term Plan includes a commitment to develop new Maternal Mental Health Services (MMHS) which are a partnership between maternity and perinatal mental health services.

The aims of the service are to support the delivery of trauma-informed care in maternity and increase access to evidence based psychological therapies for people who are experiencing mental health difficulties arising from, or related to, the maternity experience (e.g., in the context of childbirth or when there is the loss of a baby).

Helix offers psychological assessment and intervention for women and birthing people who experience pregnancy loss or the death of a baby, and who have or develop, a moderate-severe mental health problem. There is also a focus on working with the maternity system to reduce distress and other mental health difficulties (e.g., PTSD) in the context of birth and loss. Ensuring that Helix is co-produced and works to address health inequalities in relation to obstetric and mental health outcomes is a priority.

The Helix clinical team is made up of a psychology service lead, psychologists or psychological therapists, specialist midwives and expert by experience co-ordinators.

Main duties of the job

The Assistant Psychologist will have opportunities to be involved in different clinical activities under the supervision of senior psychologists/psychological therapists- including the delivery of clinical care for women, birthing people and families and the delivery of staff support. The Assistant Psychologist will also have a crucial role in supporting audit and evaluation of the new service. There will be opportunities to work alongside those with lived experience and develop skills in working psychologically in a health setting and with grief and trauma.

You would be joining a supportive and growing team of perinatal psychologists in the wider perinatal mental health service in SLAM including those who work in the community perinatal mental health teams and specialist Mother-Baby Inpatient Unit.

The role will be working across the 4 SLAM boroughs and may require some travel across south London.

SLaM employ around 5000 staff and serve a local population of 1.1 million people. We have more than 230 services including inpatient wards, outpatient and community services. Currently, provide inpatient care for approximately 5,300 people each year and treat more than 45,000 patients in the community in Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; as well as substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.
