  • St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in South London, is a teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre with our maternity unit providing care to over 5000 women yearly.
  • Our midwifery led Birth Centre – Carmen Birth Centre, named after one of our passionate community midwives – delivers approx. 600 babies a year.
  • Our dedicated teams and specialist midwives for AN screening, Infant Feeding, NIPE, Bereavement, Governance, FGM, Maternal Medicine, Diabetes, FMU/DAU, Safeguarding and Perinatal Mental Health have a wealth of experience and are able support you to develop your knowledge in areas you feel passionate about. Main duties of the job

  • We take pride in promoting midwifery by delivering holistic woman-centred care to our diverse community.
  • The enthusiastic and dynamic midwifery and obstetric teams work closely together with an embedded MDT culture to meet the specific and individual needs of women who come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds.
  • We strive to give outstanding, safe and compassionate care throughout pregnancy and birth to all women, whether they chose to give birth at home, in our Birth Centre or on our Delivery Suite. We are working towards providing a continuity team model for all women so you will be joining us at an exciting time.
  • Our outstanding maternity HDU cares for women who need more complex care and we offer training and support to all midwives interested in developing the skills to work here.
  • We are very proud of our well established Fetal Monitoring team that deliver MDT training, twice weekly teaching and clinically support learning on shifts.
  • You will gain a deeper understanding of fetal well-being, CTG and STAN monitoring that will expand your knowledge and help support a safe and healthy birth. 
  • You can develop your skills and practice across the entire maternity service and support women across the entire range of our services.
  • All contracts are rotational and you will have the opportunity to gain experience in all areas of midwifery with rotations to inpatient and outpatient areas along with opportunities to join our continuity of care teams.

  • Our Practice Education team are here to support you as you continue your midwifery journey with us and offer a comprehensive orientation package, CPD program and annual mandatory updates.
  • Our CPF's support all midwives with supporting students and offer training in SSSA so that staff can reach practice supervisor and assessor status.
  • Our PMA team have dedicated staff forums to enable midwives to talk through the challenges they are facing in their midwifery career at St George’s. They also arrange peer support. Forums are also facilitated on MS TEAMS as to support all staff to join from home if they wish.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife with NMC pin
  • Sign off Mentor/ practice assessor
  • Minimum competencies: IV drug administration, suturing, cannulation
Desirable criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate knowledge of evidence based practice.
  • Able to prioritise own workload
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of teaching and mentoring
