Team Leader / Senior Research Nurse

Job overview

This post for a Team Leader / Senior Clinical Research Nurse (TL/SCRN) under the supervision of Professor Lovat is to undertake two separate roles:

The first, and more strategic part of this role will be to support in leading the development of the Gastrointestinal Services Research Support Team at UCLH. The team requires the TL/SCRN to direct line management of UCLH employed research nurses (x2) and joint leadership of clinical trials practitioners and data managers employed by UCL. The post holder will help support and develop this team and will coordinate the work that they do in collaboration with the PIs. This should take approximately 50% of the post-holder’s time. 

The second role is to work with the Upper Gastrointestinal and Endoscopy Research team at UCLH within a multi-disciplinary team.  The post will involve leading recruitment of various GI studies. Professor Lovat is leading in building an Endoscopy database that aims to support current AI Studies and future projects. The successful postholder will maintain their own portfolio of studies in addition to their management responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

The post will involve working with GI research team which includes two clinical research fellows, one senior trial coordinators, and two UCLH clinical research nurses. The successful candidate will act as the team leader and oversee the work that the team members undertake. For the wider strategic role, the post will involve working with a much wider group of support staff and clinical fellows.

Responsibilities will include helping to screen and recruit patients, co-ordinating the care of patients on trials, collection and preparation of samples and collection of trial data, working closely with the radiology department and the clinical research facility team. It will also involve coordinating and running meetings, setting strategic targets, offering leadership in meeting the targets and coordinating interactions with the Joint Research Office (JRO) which is the R&D office of UCLH and UCL.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • For Senior Research Nurse Candidates Registered Nurse Part 1, 2, 12
  • Completed post graduate diploma in speciality or related field
  • Professionally recognised teaching course
Desirable criteria
  • Completed degree in the speciality or related field

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates a high level of knowledge from post registration nursing experience
  • Demonstrates a high level of knowledge in caring for trial patients through experience
  • Can demonstrate knowledge of clinical research through experience working with patients on clinical trials
  • Experience of formal/ informal teaching of patients and staff
  • Experience of being a mentor for junior staff
  • Experience in delivering evidence based practice
  • Experience of explaining complex concepts to patients in a clear and simplified manner
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of phlebotomy, cannulation and management of intravenous lines
  • Experience of administration of chemotherapeutic agents (if applicable)
