Job overview

The maternal medicine specialist midwife will:

Support the implementation of effective care pathways for pregnant women and birthing people for those with complex medical conditions at Whittington Health, with a key focus on addressing inequalities in all aspects of care.     

Work with the local and regional teams to provide a maternal medicine service within North Central London.

Support the development and implementing of a shared vision for midwifery within the NCL Maternal Medicine Network and delivering the Network objectives.

Provide and co-ordinate expert and high-quality professional advice from a midwifery perspective, to support and facilitate the delivery of high-quality maternal medicine services in line with the agreed shared priorities for the NCL Network.

Support co-production with service users in the planning and implementation of all services within the maternal medicine network.

Main duties of the job

Utilise the managerial structure and professional pathways within the Trust to ensure the effective provision of a high quality service.

Practise in a way that actively minimises dependency and promotes recovery of women.

Communicate information in a way that makes it relevant and understandable for women and their families.

Contribute to the development of standards for the maternal medicine service and maternity services strategy.

Work closely with the North Central London and local maternity voice partnerships (MVP), to better understand the needs of women.

Present findings at Women’s Health, North Central London Local Maternity System meetings and wider maternity forums on trends and outcomes and potential service requirements for this group

Work co-operatively with colleagues if the woman is transferred to them in order to minimise the disruption to the woman.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Have competent clinical midwifery skills and ensure appropriate assessment, implementation and evaluation of care is achieved.

Be responsible for planning and coordinating own day-to-day workload in collaboration with the needs of women and their families.

Be a key change agent for vulnerable women and safeguarding children, as well as participating in service development within the maternity unit.

Ensure that all statutory training associated with the post is undertaken.

Have expert midwifery knowledge including being skilled in palpation, maternal and fetal observations, supporting women through labour and birth, developing plans of care, IV cannulation, advising and supporting women with their feeding choice and care of the newborn.

Acting as a key member of the multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will provide assessment, psychosocial, evidence based interventions using a collaborative, recovery approach and will be skilled at proactive and positive risk management. In addition the practitioner will be expected to offer both support and advice to partners and relatives and to work in an integrated manner with key partner organisations and professionals.

The post holder will be required to provide consultative advice to other agencies and to participate in delivering training and development for other professionals

Person specification

Knowledge and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • • NMC Registered midwife (RM)
  • • Up to date professional portfolio demonstrating ongoing professional development including midwifery mandatory skills & drills and other regulatory mandatory training
  • • Knowledge of current research / reports / guidelines relating to maternity care and their implication
  • • Demonstrate awareness of clinical governance
  • • Understanding of the distinctive roles of related health professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Involvement in participating in the production of evidence-based guidelines / policies

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Woman-centred approach to care
  • • Previous comprehensive midwifery experience- at least 3 years post qualification
  • • Ability to demonstrate an expert working knowledge and clinical experience of safeguarding and midwifery in all areas of the maternity service
Desirable criteria
  • • Have worked in a multi-agency approach
  • • Involvement with clinical audit and research, including implementation and review

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • • Able to carry out the full range of midwifery skills in accordance with job description
  • • Effective organisational, time management and prioritisation skills
  • • Demonstrate ability to manage maternal medicine caseload, with high levels of complex needs, with compassion whilst maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
