Job overview
We are looking for one fixed term Locum Consultant. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team of enthusiastic and forward-thinking Histopathologists. On a fixed term contract for a year (which may be extendable), you will be part of a team working at a top hospital Trust in the heart of South London.

Main duties of the job
The post will be based at the Trust's Princess Royal University Hospital site and the proposed job plan is attached. There will be 9 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other activities.
All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust sites as required by the service. As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:
- The provision of a first class clinical service
- Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the speciality
- Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London / KHP
- Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
- Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans
- Maintaining the confident of business plans and development strategies formulated for the speciality, the Division or the Trust

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Together with the other members of Consultant staff, to develop and provide a high quality Pathology service. This includes all aspects of provision and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department especially participating in disease specific discussions within the MDT meetings.
- Responsible also for covering colleagues' period s of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility without Consultant colleagues.
- Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
- Responsible for clinic commitments (as per subspecialty requirement).
- Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
- Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from deaths.
- Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the department's Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
- Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
- Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty, This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
- Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/Departmental Manager / Clinical Director.
- Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
- Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registerable medical qualification
- FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification
- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within 6 months of interview)
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within 6 months of award of CCT by date of interview
- Applicants that not UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Desirable criteria
- Other higher degree or diploma (eg. MD, PhD)
Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- Wide experience in all aspects of Histopathology, culminating in award of CCT or equivalent
- Specialist training in Histopathology
Management, Leadership & Administration
Essential criteria
- Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience in day to day organisation of histopathology services
Desirable criteria
- Management course and/or qualification
- Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
Audit, Research and Publications
Essential criteria
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects
Desirable criteria
- Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Histopathology
- Publication of relevant review articles and/or case reports
Personal Skills & Professional Attributes
