Job overview

Are you currently an Ophthalmic Technician and interested in a Part Time - Permanent, Senior Ophthalmic Technician role, in our Orpington  Hospital Clinic.

You must have ophthalmic diagnostic knowledge and skill set and enjoy teaching while working with the team to deliver safe and quality care.  As a senior technician you will support staff developing in line with the department competency framework and assessment.

It is essential you can coordinate patient flow, prioritise workload, and demonstrate a receptive attitude to change with the ability to challenge practice. 

The service is open 7 days and may involve working at other ophthalmology care group sites.  If this is of interest, then do apply.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide safe and effective care to a defined group of service users reporting to and under the indirect supervision of senior technicians and registered practitioners in line with governance, agreed standards and guidelines.

The role involves independent and team working to provide an ophthalmic diagnostic service which, includes a technician delivered pathway.

The post holder has a wide set of diagnostic skills and knowledge for ophthalmic sub-specialities and is a member of the multi-professional team caring for patients, maintaining clinical records, patient flow and support staff development by providing training, feedback and competency assessment.

The post holder when assessed as competent will undertake and extend their range of delegated/diagnostic tasks and work in a manner that promotes professionalism, dignity and human rights through adoption of person-centred care principles

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent ophthalmology experience
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards an optical or medical photographers qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge on ocular anatomy and conditions
  • Knowledge on teaching and training staff
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of service redesign

Skills and Competencies
