Looking for a change or setting out on a new career path? This post may be what you are looking for.  This  post  uniquely combines administration skills with direct patient contact, carrying out under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist.

This post is attached to a team of therapy staff working with patients with Stroke. Occupational therapy assistants have a key role in assisting patients to reach their full potential and helping them leave hospital safely. The role will include providing support to patients in treatment programmes and you will accompany staff on home visits, fitting equipment and environmental assessments. There will also be a requirement to complete administrative tasks, monitoring of stock and reduction of infection risk by cleaning and maintenance of some equipment.

The candidate must have good communication and people skills, good written, administrative and computer skills, good organisational skills and time management. The work does involve physical activity therefore fitness to assist in manual handling of patients.

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

§ 

To carry own caseload of patients  or assist in the treatment of patients in one to one or group sessions  as delegated by the Stroke Occupational Therapists and to provide treatment to patients following a plan utilising a variety of occupational therapy techniques  assisting patients to practise carrying out everyday tasks eg eating & drinking, toileting, dressing, grooming, kitchen tasks, upper limb exercise programmes. 

To monitor patients physical and thinking skills and to recognise change whilst undertaking a range of activities and report these changes  to the occupational therapist or other ward staff as appropriate.

To measure, adjust and supply equipment to patients in their homes before discharge. To teach the patient and carers safe usage of equipment.

To liaise with Stroke and other Occupational Therapists in the hospital, managers  as well as administrative/support staff as necessary to ensure the smooth running of the department, both clinically and administratively (eg photocopying, record keeping, filing, errands and making appointments)

To be responsible for competent use and maintenance of all equipment used, to report defects and  be responsible for stock control within clinical areas ensuring consistent supply and request new orders. 

To maintain accurate and timely patient notes and activity records in accordance with departmental policy and to follow and adhere with Occupational Therapy department and Trust policies & procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • § To carry own caseload of patients as delegated by the stroke Occupational Therapists and to provide treatment to stroke patients following a plan utilising a variety of basic occupational therapy techniques  assisting patients to practise carrying out everyday tasks eg eating & drinking, toileting, dressing, grooming, kitchen tasks, upper limb exercise programmes. 
  • §  To monitor patients physical and thinking skills and to recognise change whilst undertaking a range of activities and report these changes  to the occupational therapist or other ward staff as appropriate.
  • §  To assist the occupational therapist with individual/group treatments progressing to independent routine treatment sessions and supervision of groups where maintenance of function is the objective.
  • §  To measure, adjust and supply equipment to patients in their homes before discharge. To teach the patient and carers safe usage of equipment. Develop clinical judgement skills regarding routine supply of equipment for independence using a protocol or instruction from the occupational therapist.
  • §  To liaise with managers, Stroke and other Occupational Therapists in the hospital as well as administrative and support staff as necessary to ensure the smooth running of the department, both clinically and administratively (eg photocopying, record keeping, filing, errands and making appointments)
  • §  To be responsible for competent use and maintenance of all equipment used, to report defects in equipment in a timely manner ; to be responsible for stock control within clinical areas ensuring consistent supply and request new orders.

  • Collect, unpack and store new supplies.
  • §  To follow Occupational Therapy department and Trust policies & procedures and comment on changes as required
  • §  To demonstrate capability in occupational therapy assistant skills, by completing the tasks listed in the Assistant Induction and competency Checklist, within the first 3 months of employment.
  • §  To contribute /undertake in-service training to improve patient care and for personal development and organise programme on a rotational basis.
  • §  To be responsible for personal Life Long Learning, and ensure that LLL is reflective in clinical and non-clinical practice.
  • §  To contribute/participate in the unit's ongoing national stroke audit programme (SSNAP) as well as other relevant audits  as required.
  • ·       To observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
  • ·       To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.  To be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.

 

The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

 

The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role.

These requirements are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training.  These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.
