An exciting opportunity has arisen within Blood Sciences, for a suitably qualified Senior Biomedical Scientist (Quality and Training Supervisor). We are looking for a Senior BMS with experience in Biochemistry in particular Quality and Training to join our team. The preference is for someone who has a very good understanding of Biochemistry but all Blood Sciences specialities will be considered.

We are seeking applications from well-motivated, enthusiastic individuals for the post of Quality and Training Supervisor (Band 7) to join our Biochemistry Department.

The successful candidate will join an excellent team providing an efficient and effective Quality and Training service to 2 busy district general hospitals. The ideal candidate should be highly motivated with good interpersonal, leadership and organisational skills and ideally have experience of leading a section of the laboratory.

You should possess excellent communication and time management skills and have a systematic and flexible approach to work.

They must be committed to quality and improvement and can demonstrate IT knowledge to enable them to drive the department forward.

                                                                                            

                                                              

Main duties of the job

Responsible for supervising compliance to relevant statutory regulatory standards to meet accreditation requirements. To maintain the quality monitoring system to audit compliance of the Pathology Quality Management System and facilitate the development of assigned staff group through the various levels of training pertinent to their role. They will be responsible for supporting and promoting quality improvement.

More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we’re proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The department actively encourages participation in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to develop skills that will assist you in the pursuit of career ambitions.

Pathology at BHRUT is a UKAS accredited to ISO15189 laboratory and an approved IBMS training laboratory across different disciplines.

The Biochemistry Department is currently managed across laboratories based at Queens Hospital Romford and King George Hospital Goodmayes. All staff are expected to be able to work on either site as required; this post will be expected to cover the training and quality requirements at both sites. The department of Biochemistry which is part of Blood Sciences plays a pivotal role in the provision of 26 million diagnostic tests annually for the Trust and primary care services.

The department at QH is equipped with Roche Cobas 8100 automated workflow series, Cobas 8000 analysers (c702/ e801) and COBAS Pure analyser in the Hot Lab.

At KGH it is also equipped with Roche Cobas analysers (c702/e801), Roche P612 pre-analytic, Sebia Capillaries Electrophoresis analysers, Phadia 250 analysers for RAST testing, Binding Site Optilite for Serum Free Light Chain assays.

The Prenatal Screening Department based at King George Hospital provides a high-quality screening service for chromosomal disorders, such as Down's syndrome, to antenatal patients at the Trust and to a number of antenatal centres in London and the Southeast.

We operate a 24/7 service on both sites. The Trust is currently exploring an alternative system to accommodate the increasing demand for routine 24/7 testing.

This is a full time post working 37.5 hours per week. A flexible attitude to working hours is essential. The hours are currently within a framework of 08.00–20.00 including weekend & Bank Holiday working. These arrangements are subject to continuing review.

Both hospitals offer a pleasant working environment and are well served by several bus routes and mainline stations nearby.
