Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a candidate interested in a Haematology Consultant post at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are looking for an enthusiastic haematologist to join our well established, dedicated and supportive team.

The successful candidate will join a team of eight consultants supported by four registrars from the North East London rotation and five clinical fellows to serve a population of 750,000. This is one of two additional posts that will bring the consultant establishment to 10.

Our geographic location is ideal for candidates looking for a fast commute from London (Liverpool Street to Romford <30 minutes and on the Elizabeth line) as well as those seeking a more rural or semi-rural lifestyle in Essex or Hertfordshire. There are outstanding schools locally including the excellent Essex grammar schools, high performing state schools in Redbridge and Essex, and numerous well-regarded independent schools.

We would be delighted to welcome you for an informal visit as we are very proud of our department and all it has to offer.

Visits can be arranged by Dr Karan Wadehra by email: [email protected]

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 88,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

•    Outline of main job duties/responsibilities
•    This text is required as part of the vacancy creation
•    This is a new field and will allow candidates with different accessibility requirements to be able to read and understand what the role entails.
•    If your job description is over the word count you may wish to consider outlining the main & specific responsibilities in the below field and uploading the full job description as a supporting document.
The post holder will have training and expertise in both malignant and non-malignant aspects of Haematology and will be expected to provide the following services to a high standard:

•    Advice and Refer: Triage of electronic referrals from primary care including advice to GP colleagues, and acceptance of appropriate referrals on routine, urgent and suspected cancer pathways.

•    Outpatient Hematology clinics: Undertake three outpatient clinics per week, two of these will be in your area of specialist practice.
•    MDT: Attend and participate in an MDT relevant to your specialist area.  Supporting diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex presentations and disease.

•    Laboratory: Support the diagnostic service and complete in-house reporting of bone marrows, attend and participate in weekly morphology review.

•    In-patient and Day Unit: On a rota with the other consultants and in conjunction with the junior medical team, manage acutely unwell patients on the dedicated hematology and oncology ward as well as outlying wards and the day unit. Duties include a daily board round on Sky B and a ward round twice a week.

•    On-call rota: Participate in the on-call rota 1:7.5. On-call Monday to Friday covers after 5pm until 9am the following morning. On-call Saturday and Sunday covers the entire weekend supported by an on-site haematology registrar 9am to 5pm, and the medical team overnight. There is an expectation of weekend consultant-led ward rounds of new admissions/any unwell patients. Acute admissions are taken by the medical team out of hours, but haematology review may be requested the following day. This would only be needed for acutely unwell, complex patients. There is a dedicated lab team, experienced in morphology, therefore onsite attendance is rarely required.

•    Teaching and Training: Participate in the core medical trainee and specialist haematology trainee teaching programme in addition to being a clinical supervisor for junior doctors.

•    Research and clinical trials: Where appropriate contribute to the existing clinical trials programme.

•    Clinical governance: All clinicians are expected to comply with the structures and requirements for clinical governance within the Trust including but not exclusively attendance at local morbidity and mortality meetings, timely investigation and response to complaints and incidents, participation in collection and analysis of patient and carer feedback.

•    Quality improvement projects, guideline development and audit: All clinicians are expected to take an active part in quality improvement, guideline development and clinical audit in their respective specialty area.
