Job overview

We are looking for an Apprentice Health Care Assistant to join the team on the Children and Young People's Assessment Unit (CYPAU). You will have excellent communication skills, be committed, caring and compassionate and be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Our busy Children’s Department covers two sites, Queens Hospital in Romford and King George Hospital in Ilford. We have two inpatient wards, one with a co-located 4 bedded HDU, we also have 2 CYPAU's. There is a day unit with a POSCU and haematology service, two outpatient departments with a GP ‘hot clinic’, a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and a Children’s Community Nursing team.
We also have a 32 cot level 2 NICU and two busy ED’s for children, with over 62,000 attendances each year.
Alongside the role you will complete the Level 3 Senior Health Care Support Worker – Children and Young People apprenticeship. If you already hold this or another healthcare qualification at Level 3 or above, then you are not eligible to apply. If you do not hold the required level of Maths and English, you will also complete Functional Skills Level 2.

Please read the advert and Job Description carefully before applying, ensuring that you clearly demonstrate how you meet the criteria in the person specification.
To be eligible for an Apprenticeship you must meet the following criteria:
Be 18 years old or over
Have the right to work in the UK (without restrictions)
Have been permanently resident in the UK for the past 3 years

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist the Ward Manager in the provision of a clean, well maintained ward area with effective stock ordering and rotation, appropriate management and escalation of equipment and estates issues which require attention or repair together with effective escalation of concerns related to cleaning and catering.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with.
Many of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.
Patients across north east London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.
We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.
