Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) has an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join its dynamic multiprofessional Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care team (MSPCT).  We are seeking a enthusiastic individual, who enjoys the challenges of an acute trust, will support trainees, and work collaboratively with community partners to enhance services on the local footprint.  Areas of special interest are welcomed. Applicants must be on the Specialist Palliative Care Register or within 6 months of CCT

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide specialist palliative care to patients in the acute hospital across both sites Queens & King George’s Hospital, directly by providing clinical care for patients, and indirectly by supporting colleagues in their provision of care to patients with specialist palliative care needs, through clinical advice, education, and support with quality improvement initiatives. The postholder will be expected to develop expertise in an area of special interest relevant to the specialty, locality and regional strategy and to contribute to research development, with interest/experience in research desirable.

Patients across northeast London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.

Role Requirements and General Responsibilities

 The successful candidate is expected to:

  • ·         Provide direct clinical care to patients across Queens and King Georges Hospitals
  • ·         Complete consultant ward rounds
  • ·         Provide face to face and telephone advice to the CNS team, doctors and other healthcare professionals
  • ·       Participate in MDT Meetings
  • ·         Provide clinical supervision to registrars, specialty doctors and non-medical prescribers on the team
  • ·         Contribute to multidisciplinary teaching and local education programmes
  • ·         Participate in audit and quality improvement work
  • ·         Attend and participate in local palliative care network meetings and strategic planning
  • ·         Cover the on-call rota every 1 in 5 weeks, Category B

  • ·         MRCP, MRCGP, FRCA or equivalent qualification
  • ·         Be on the specialist register for Palliative Medicine or be within six months of entry at the time of interview

  • ·         Masters degree or other higher degree in a relevant subject
  • ·         Post graduate teaching diploma or similar
