Job overview

We are pleased to proceed with the appointment of 4 Medical Examiner’s (ME) working 1PA each, to support and expand this service across the Trust, based at King George and Queens Hospitals.

This is a new service, created by the department of Health and Social Care introduced nationally which is in effect a new medical specialty, needed to oversee and improve all aspects of accuracy and completion of death certification.

The successful candidate will be senior consultant grade doctor, registered with the GMC and licensed to practice in the UK with a minimum of five years post qualification experience. The ME's who will come from a diverse variety of clinical specialties, both hospital and General Practice, will work part-time (predominantly 1 PA) and be part of a mutually supportive team.

Main duties of the job

The ME role interacts with many departments (both within and outside the trust) and clinical specialities to provide proportionate but robust scrutiny of the medical circumstances leading up to the patients death and all medical aspects of death certification.

This includes reviewing the clinical notes, discussion with and supporting Clinicians, overseeing coronial referrals and providing medical advice for the Coroner. However, most importantly this provides independent support and transparent explanation to the bereaved, giving them the opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns.

At BHRUT, the ME work is carried out on site (and not remotely) at either Queens or King George hospital. The post’s are for 1 PA, this will be a on predetermined day of the week to comply with the existing rota. A rota for occasional working at the weekend is also expected. This is currently paid on an hourly basis separately.

The Medical Examiner Service at BHRUT is based cross  site at Queens and King George Hospitals. When first introduced the service scrutinised hospital-based deaths but now this is extended to community deaths also. Currently the service operates between 08:00 am and 05:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Medical Examiner work part time for ME duties and continue to work in their principal speciality with a reduction in PA commitment.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with.

Many of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.

Patients across north east London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.
