Job overview
With significant funding investment into Ophthalmology services, King’s College Hospital NHS Trust are transforming our ophthalmology services. As part of this, we are looking for a dedicated, motivated and enthusiastic Optometrist who wants to further develop their skills in an extended role capacity, to join our friendly multi-disciplinary team.
Training and support will be provided to develop roles, which may include a wide range of extended scope, such as eye casualty, medical retina, and glaucoma, cornea as well as core Optometry clinics.
Previous hospital experience and independent prescribing is desirable. Competency based training will be provided with funding for independent prescribing. Banding will be dependent on experience and successful completion of competencies.
There may be some cross- site working across Kings college Hospital NHS Trust Ophthalmic locations.
Main duties of the job
- To work within the multi-disciplinary team working autonomously as an optometrist managing a wide and complex clinical caseload.
- To provide high quality evidence based optometry care to diagnose, plan, implement and monitor treatment.
- To teach pre-reg optometrists, orthoptic, nursing and ophthalmic colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To work within the multi-disciplinary team working autonomously as an optometrist managing a wide and complex clinical caseload.
- To provide high quality evidence based optometry care to diagnose, plan, implement and monitor treatment
- Optometrist extended role responsibilities may also involve working in specialist clinics including contact lens, glaucoma, cornea, retina and eye casualty and depending on service needs, training will be provided in other areas of Optometry and Ophthalmology.
- To ensure, individually and as part of the team, the effective and efficient running of the orthoptic /optometry and ophthalmology service.
- To teach pre-reg optometrists, orthoptic, nursing and ophthalmic colleagues
- To work autonomously within the multi-disciplinary team working as an optometrist managing a wide and complex clinical caseload.
- Assessment of patients' refractive errors and correction in clinic, involving adult and paediatric objective and subjective refraction
- Responsibilities may also involve working in specialist clinics including glaucoma, cornea, retina and contact lens.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree in Optometry
- Registration with General Optical Council
Desirable criteria
- Independent prescribing qualification
- Teaching qualification
- Post graduate study
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Clinical optometry experience with adults and paediatrics
- Hospital optometry experience
- Specialist/extended role experience
Desirable criteria
- Taking part in audit
Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to manage own caseload and use initiative
- Flexible approach to working including problem solving skills and management of change
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of computerised patient records
- Knowledge of Microsoft office, Teams, Excel etc
