Job overview

  • Responsible for providing professional leadership and supervision in managing and developing pharmacy patient services based in the dispensary on the Ealing site.
  • Responsible for the induction and training for all staff working in Dispensary to work to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Lead on and support the quality improvement initiatives within the pharmacy department.
  • Evaluate and introduce innovations in pharmacy practice and patient services.
  • Responsible for the effective and efficient management of pharmacy dispensary services to wards, departments and patients.
  • Play a pivotal role in education, training and appraisal of pharmacy staff in all aspects of patient services.
  • Provides clinical expertise on drug usage in line with National and Trust policies.
  • Deputise for the Principal pharmacist – Operations, in their absence.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for setting and maintaining clinical standards in patient services (including inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services).
  • Maintain existing dispensary services and develop novel enhanced dispensary services.
  • Developing patient services in response to patient and staff feedback.
  • Evaluate innovative programs or services in pharmacy and lead/support in their implementation.
  • Identify and lead on own quality improvement projects.
  • Support the quality improvement initiatives throughout the pharmacy department.
  • Responsible for reporting on Controlled Drug governance within patient services.
  • Responsible for the training and development of dispensary staff (together with the Band 7 Pharmacy Dispensary Manager) including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy assistants and trainee pharmacists & technicians.
  • Is a tutor for postgraduate pre-registration pharmacists and for the Postgraduate Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice.
  • Manage the induction of new staff.
  • Recruitment of new pharmacy staff.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Minimum of 2-year post-registration competence based training within Hospital setting
  • Postgraduate Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership Course

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Advanced pharmaceutical knowledge of medicines
  • Good pharmaceutical knowledge, training and competence in medicines optimisation to ensure individual patients receive the most cost-effective medicines, which are tailored to meet their specific pharmaceutical needs
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in directly line managing pharmacy staff
