Clinical Nurse Specialist Apheresis/vascular access

Job overview

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and highly motivated Nurse who can blend in two roles of working within two teams, the Vascular Access Team and the Apheresis Unit. This is a very exciting opportunity to maintain and/ or further develop skills on insertion of central venous catheters such as acute CVCs (Vascath type) and PICCs. The role will also contribute to the development of advanced competencies/ skills in the transplant speciality by performing cell collection procedures for stem cell transplants, CAR T therapies and trials.

Vascular Access and Apheresis units are both located in 2nd floor of Oak Cancer Centre. The work hours and workdays are between 0800- 1800 hrs, Mondays – to Fridays with 3 days off.  

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for participating fully in all aspects of the apheresis service alongside the other apheresis staff. This service is firmly embedded within a quality management framework. The main aim is to co-ordinate and perform both collection and therapeutic Apheresis procedures. These include autologous and related donor stem cell collections, lymphocyte collections for CAR-T and donors, diagnostic lymphocyte collections for clinical trials, and therapeutic plasma exchange, adhering to the highest safety and regulatory standards. The role involves supporting, educating and providing holistic care to patients and carers, and collaborating with the Transplant, Cellular Therapy, and Research teams in addition to the wider multidisciplinary team and referring hospitals.

  • To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.
  • To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long-term goals or plans.
  • To participate fully in the day-to-day organization and running of the Vascular Access Team including the triage of referrals, PICC insertion, troubleshooting and monitoring of patients with CVADs in situ and liaison as required with other medical teams.

Attainments

Essential criteria
  • First level registration
  • Post registration oncology qualification or equivalent relevant qualification
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • MSc or willingness to work towards
Desirable criteria
  • At least 2 years experience of apheresis collection
  • Relevant diploma / degree
  • Research methods education

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Competent in venepuncture and cannulation
  • Competent to undertake apheresis procedures
  • Competent to assess veins for apheresis
  • Previous experience in clinical speciality of post applied for e.g. haematology
  • Experience in intravenous drug administration
  • Experience in ultrasound cannulation guided techniques and PICC insertion and other CVADs (e.g. short term CVCs)
  • Expert in the care and maintenance of all type of Vascular Access Devices (VADs)
  • Sufficient post registration nursing experience in vascular access, oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
  • Personal and leadership management experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as a senior staff nurse or above working in an apheresis unit
  • Competent in care of central venous access
  • Experience in Clinical Management
  • Evidence of relevant teaching experience
