Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT Assistant

The Royal Marsden Hospital is Europe's largest Oncology centre with sites in Chelsea and Sutton. Diagnostic Imaging provides an essential service to the Trust. 

The successful candidate will be based at our Sutton site, and will be expected to rotate through Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT and participate, if required, in a flexible working pattern covering 8:00am to 8:00pm.

The nuclear medicine assistant will be integral in the timely, efficient and courteous provision of Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT services.  Duties will include:

a.) Communicating appointment details to patients 
b.) Ensuring that all patients are appropriately prepared and ready for imaging procedures
c.) Assisting radiographers and technologists in the performance of Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT procedures
d.) Provision of appropriate patient care

Training in radiation protection and appropriate nuclear medicine and PET/CT procedures will be provided. A willingness to assist in the acquisition of research and audit data will also be an advantage.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to professional development, an enthusiasm for their work and a high level of patient care and commitment. They will be expected to support the service in continuing to maintain and develop the highest standards of imaging and patient care.

1.1.    The post holder will be responsible for supporting the provision of Nuclear Medicine and PET services in a timely, efficient and courteous way.

1.2.    The post-holder will liaise with a variety of staff throughout the Trust, including wards and theatres and with those from other NHS trusts. The key working relationships in the department will be with the imaging, medical, clerical and nursing staff.

1.3.    The post holder will have considerable patient contact, including contact with the terminally ill. Patient presentation will include the unconscious, incapacitated, confused and those with physical and mental disabilities.

•    To ensure correct identification of patients
•    Communicate with and support radiographic/technical, medical and nursing staff in the examination of patients by ensuring a safe, clean and hygienic working environment.
•    To deal with colleagues, patients, carers and relatives in a helpful, reassuring and friendly manner.
•    Ensure patients are appropriately prepared for nuclear medicine and PET/CT procedures following defined protocols. 
•    To direct and escort patients and their belongings between departments and clinical areas either on foot, in wheelchairs or on beds. 
•    Contact patients by telephone in advance of scheduled planning appointments to ensure attendance and provide relevant instructions.
•    Undertake routine procedures using hospital based patient information systems (HIS/ICW), including searching for patients’ details and updating and checking these when a patient attends.
•    Assist patients in their personal preparation for nuclear medicine and PET/CT procedures, including helping with dressing.
•    To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination.

  • Evidence of A level in one subject

Experience

  • Experience of working with oncology patients
