Job overview

The Uro-Oncology Unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital at Sutton treats patients with prostate, bladder, testicular and penile cancers. It has a large NHS referral practice and comprehensive research programmes in the treatment of localised and metastatic disease. The Unit’s Consultants Prof Robert Huddart, Prof Chris Parker, Dr Alison Tree, Dr Alison Reid, Dr Julia Murray, Dr Shaista Hafeez, Dr Angela Pathmanathan who are recognised national/international opinion leaders.  The Unit has a particular interest in the development of advanced radiotherapy techniques.

The post will be suitable for trainees in either clinical or medical oncology. The contract will be offered initially for a fixed term of 1 year and may be extended if desired by both parties.  The applicant will require GMC registration.

Main duties of the job

This appointment is for a one year clinical fellowship to care for patients in our clinics and to contribute to radiotherapy planning and delivery (for radiation/clinical oncology applicants) and/or systemic therapy management and research. The successful applicant will participate in consultant-led clinics most days, gaining a broad specialist experience in prostate, bladder and testis cancer. Most clinics occur at the Royal Marsden Sutton, but the post-holder may be asked to also attend satellite clinics at local hospitals.

Specialist training is offered in radiotherapy contouring, including the opportunity to learn online adaptive MR-guided radiotherapy for interested candidates. Due to our large clinical trial portfolio (both systemic therapy and radiotherapy trials) we can also offer experience and training in clinical trial implementation and management.

The post holder will be based in the Royal Marsden hospital in Sutton unit.

The post holder is expected to be a medically qualified doctor with experience in oncology. For clinical/radiation oncology candidates FRCR (or equivalent) is preferred but not mandatory.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities are likely to include

  • Participation in 4-5 outpatient clinics per week
  • Participation (including presenting cases and documenting decisions) in 1-2 multi-disciplinary team meetings per week
  • Supporting nurse specialist, radiographer and medical secretarial teams in dealing with patient and staff enquiries
  • Providing cover for the registrar phones and duties when required
  • Contributing to the research and quality improvement activities of the unit (independent research by the clinical fellows is also encouraged)
  • On occasion, providing support to the ward teams where necessary
  • For radiation/clinical oncology applicants: contribute to the radiotherapy planning workload of the team, consent patients for radiotherapy within agreed competencies

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • FRCR (Clinical Oncology) or equivalent
  • Additional degree (BSc, MSc, PhD)

Experience

  • Currently undertaking oncology training in a recognised UK or overseas centre, or recently completed training.
  • Good understanding of the principles of clinical management of malignancy.
  • Experience in uro-oncology.

  • Publication of at least one peer- reviewed article in oncology.
