South West London Pathology is an award winning pathology partnership between four Hospital Trusts – St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust and Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust – designed to provide an integrated, high quality pathology service for hospitals and GPs across South West London, by bringing together the best of each Trust’s service and providing them within a single organisation.

The Microbiology department at St George’s has state of the art equipment, offering full laboratory automation and a vast array of molecular platforms.  The laboratory prides itself on its innovative and progressive approach to Microbiology.

Microbiology at SWLP is looking for Specialist Biomedical Scientists to join our dynamic, friendly team as Specialist Biomedical Scientists (Band 6).  You will be deployed in Bacteriology.  The department offers the latest equipment in the Microbiology field with three Kiestra lines, MALDI-ToF technology, Uri-system, BD FX and MGIT, BD Phoenix, EntericBio,  Liaison XLs and new state of the art molecular diagnostic instruments.

The department also offers an extensive screening programme for latent TB for the London region.

The post holder will be expected to have good knowledge and experience in Bacteriology and should include mycology, parasitology and mycobacteriology.  

You will be expected to participate in a 24/7 shift system which includes weekend, night, late and bank holiday working as part of hours.

Provides specialist clinical technical services to patients that may include research and audit samples.

Contributes to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department.

Able to perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Registered Biomedical Scientist.

To assist in training and supervising staff and deputising for the Advanced Biomedical Scientist when necessary.

  • ·         HCPC Registration
  • ·         Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent experience

Knowledge and Experience

  • ·         Excellent working knowledge of specialist subject in relevant discipline
  • ·         Evidence of continuing professional development
  • ·         Knowledge of health and safety issues
