We have been working together in a Partnership between Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust for some time, with a single Chair and Chief Executive since 2021 and single Executive Team since 2022. We launched our North London Mental Health Partnership Strategy in May 2023 and in July 2023 our Boards agreed that coming together to create one new Trust is best for our service users, our staff and our local communities. Subject to final approvals, we will be formally established as one new Trust on 1 October 2024.

Job overview

The post holder will provide highly specialist psychological assessments, formulations and therapies, in addition to psychological advice and consultation to others involved in service user care.  The post holder will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and will contribute to psychological thinking within the MDT. The clinical work is undertaken in a range of settings including clinic, clients homes and schools.

The post holder will provide clinical supervision to trainee clinical psychologists and other appropriate clinicians as required.  

The post holder will utilise research skills for audit, policy, research and service development within the service.

The post holder will participate in CPD and other developmental activities, keeping up to date with relevant psychological research and national guidance.  They will attend clinical, professional and managerial supervision.

 

Main duties of the job

  1. Provide highly developed specialist psychological assessments, based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources (including psychological/neuropsychological tests, measures/rating scales, direct and indirect observation and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and involved others.
  2. Formulate plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of children and young people with a learning disability across a range of settings, based upon a broad theoretical knowledge base to analyse, interpret, and compare complex information in order to design specialist programmes of intervention for individuals, groups and families tailored to individual need.
  3. To be responsible for implementing a broad range of evidence-based specialist psychological interventions which require the formulation and modification of plans and strategies as practice and experience demands.  This will require the adjustment and refinement of complex formulations which draw on different explanatory models, and the maintenance of a number of provisional hypotheses.
  4. To provide expertise and specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals and agencies contributing directly to service users’ formulation and intervention plans.
  5. To ensure that multidisciplinary colleagues have access to a psychologically based framework for understanding the care of service users.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

Clinical

  1. Provide highly developed specialist psychological assessments, based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources (including psychological/neuropsychological tests, measures/rating scales, direct and indirect observation and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and involved others.
  2. Formulate plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of children and young people with a learning disability across a range of settings, based upon a broad theoretical knowledge base to analyse, interpret, and compare complex information in order to design specialist programmes of intervention for individuals, groups and families tailored to individual need.
  3. To be responsible for implementing a broad range of evidence-based specialist psychological interventions which require the formulation and modification of plans and strategies as practice and experience demands.  This will require the adjustment and refinement of complex formulations which draw on different explanatory models, and the maintenance of a number of provisional hypotheses.
  4. To provide expertise and specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals and agencies contributing directly to service users’ formulation and intervention plans.
  5. To ensure that multidisciplinary colleagues have access to a psychologically based framework for understanding the care of service users.
  6. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.
  7. To undertake risk assessment and management and to provide specialist advice for psychologists and other professionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.
  8. To be responsible for providing highly complex, sensitive, distressing and emotionally challenging information where there are often barriers to acceptance.
  9. To spend sustained amounts of time with service users who may be experienced as aggressive and hostile, who may have poor communication skills, poor self-care and complex physical and/or mental health needs.
  10. To be mindful of the needs of individuals and families from a wide range of racial, cultural, sexual, religious, disability and social backgrounds and to develop with colleagues innovative ways of working across language, cultural and communication barriers.
  11. To be responsible for developing and maintaining knowledge of local resources and developing working relationships with relevant statutory, voluntary and community groups and organisations.  Provide expert consultation about the psychological care of the service user group to external staff and organisations.
  12. To be responsible for recording, monitoring and reporting on clinical work and communicating complex clinical information to a variety of recipients, e.g. service users, families and carers, other professionals, formal panels and statutory and voluntary organisations, orally, in writing and/or electronically.
  13. To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care and to monitor progress during the course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary care.

People (HR) Management Teaching, Training and Supervision

  1. In line with professional practice guidelines and HCPC registration requirements, take part in regular professional supervision and appraisal. 
  2. Provide specialist placements for trainee psychologists and other psychological therapists in training, ensuring they are provided with necessarily clinical and research/evaluation skills and experience to develop competent practice, and contributing to the assessment and evaluation of those competencies.
  3. Manage the workloads of trainee clinical psychologists and other identified supervisees, within the framework of the team/service’s policies and procedures.
  4. With the support of your line manager to provide annual appraisals, and performance and professional development oversight for supervisees.
  5. Provide specialist consultation, training and (where agreed) clinical supervision to other professionals for their provision of psychologically based interventions for service users.
  6. To provide advice, consultation and training to staff working with the client group across a range of agencies and settings, where appropriate.
  7. Ensure the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes.   

 

Management, Policy and Service Development

 

  1. To contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the service’s operational policies and services, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit, as well as knowledge of national policies and drivers, and local key performance indicators.
  2. To advise both service and professional management on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.
  3. To be involved, as appropriate, in the shortlisting and interviewing of relevant staff.
  4. To participate in the Haringey CAMHS Psychology meetings, CAMHS meetings and CAMHS-LD team meetings and apply agreed standards to all work undertaken, in line with Trust Clinical Governance policies.
  5. To take a key role in the development of care pathways within the CAMHS-LD team, including ensuring consistency and quality of service and adherence to the principles of national agendas namely the Transforming Care agenda, Thrive agenda, STOMP/STAMP principles and the NHS long term plan.

Research and Service Evaluation

  1. To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice in direct and indirect interventions, during consultations, in MDT work and during meetings.
  2. To monitor the effectiveness of the clinical work undertaken either personally or jointly with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that it reflects the best available evidence for practice.
  3. To participate in data collection, audit and clinical research designed to improve the understanding and effectiveness of services delivered to service users. This will be agreed with the Trust according to clinical governance guidelines and in agreement with the post-holder’s service and professional managers.
  4. To disseminate research from work that the post-holder has been involved in, in a way that will benefit the services provided by the Trust. This will include feedback from any training opportunities that the post-holder has been able to attend as part of their employment with the Trust.
  5. To undertake appropriate research and provide research advice to other staff undertaking research.

Information Management and Technology

  1. Provide accurate and timely clinical information as required and input into Trust electronic record systems.  Ensure that supervisees meet the required standards for recording.
  2. Use information technology in line with Trust and NHS information governance requirements, and maintain up to date knowledge of systems and governance requirements.
  3. To use computers to write reports and record data, including the use of statistical packages as part of psychological testing, research and assessment when needed,.
  4. Collate and report on information across service area using information systems to a high standard.
  5. Prepare teaching materials and presentations to a professional level.

 

Person specification

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the BPS. Registration with HCPC required – UK approved courses only
  • Doctoral or masters level qualification in Family & Systemic Psychotherapy
  • Current (or eligible for) UKCP Systemic Registration. (Successfully candidates would be required to register)
  • Qualification in relevant mental health / social welfare profession, e.g. psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, nurse, or equivalence accreditation of prior experience & learning (AFT 2007).
Desirable criteria
  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology
  • Eligibility for Chartered Psychologist status
  • PBS training/knowledge/experience
  • Training in clinical supervision / teaching of family & systemic psychotherapy
  • AFT accredited & registered Clinical Supervisor

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients presenting in NHS secondary services, across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community/teams, primary care and in patient and day settings.
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity s including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team setting.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Highly skilled (doctoral or masters level) in using the complete range of family & systemic models, (i.e structural, behavioural, Milan, post Milan, narrative, solution focused etc
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc)
  • High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies CBT, FI, Open Dialogue or Cognitive Remediation.
