Job overview

The maternity support worker is a key member of our multidisciplinary team. With their specialist knowledge they will support midwives in providing an insightful women and birthing people service based on current evidence and research.

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated Community Maternity Support Workers to join our existing team. The Community Maternity Support Worker (MSW) will work as a member of the midwifery team in the delivery of safe care to women and their babies, within the community setting. The successful applicants will need to be working Monday-Friday (not including Bank Holidays). The shifts will be predominantly short shifts.

The post holder will provide teaching of parenting skills using current knowledge gained from experience and training, and will ensure that women/birthing people, their babies, and families are cared for in a safe environment that ensures privacy and dignity is always maintained.

The post holder will actively seek the views of women/ birthing people and their families on the understanding of their care needs and develop a relationship to ensure their experience is positive.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

  • To assist the registered midwife/ professional in the delivery of midwifery care
  • To communicate with the woman/birthing person, in such a way, that respects and considers their level of understanding.
  • To record all care/advice given on the Trust’s electronic patient recording system and where required complete paper documentation in line with Trust policy on record keeping.
  • Support with infant feeding and actively encourage and support women/birthing people who choose to breastfeed their babies in line with the Trust policy and national initiatives.
  • The post holder will achieve the necessary skills and knowledge through training, to carry out phlebotomy, neonatal screening, serum bilirubin and blood glucose monitoring procedures, basic wound care amongst others.
  •  To have a clear understanding of professionalism and boundaries when supporting women/birthing people in their home environment.

Essential criteria
  • 5 GCSE’s or equivalent including English and Maths (A-C)
  • NVQ/QCF Level 2 in Health and Social Care OR equivalent
  • NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health and Social Care OR equivalent. Completed OR soon to complete.
  • experience in a maternity unit/community or a hospital environment, which has utilised skills and knowledge that must be of benefit to the post e.g. vital signs and venepuncture
