Would you like to join an energetic and supportive team? We are looking for an experienced Speech and Language Therapist to lead our inpatient service. The candidate should be someone with excellent clinical knowledge and skills, leadership abilities and who is enthusiastic about service promotion and development.  

 

This is a fantastic opportunity for a band 7 clinician who has already demonstrated their leadership abilities or who is hoping to further develop and expand this skill set.

Main duties of the job

Our excellent team currently consists of 8 Speech & Language Therapists and we have achieved Trust-wide recognition for our patient care and teamwork. The wider Dietetic and Speech Therapy Service offers regular team meetings, supervision and support with continuous professional development opportunities.

The role will require clinical input to the acute wards and ITU. There is also the expectation the post holder will provide guidance or clinical support for patients on the stroke and slow-stream neuro-rehabilitation units.  We are looking for someone with highly specialist clinical skills and competency with videofluoroscopy, FEES and tracheostomy.

You will provide supervision and competency training to junior members of the Speech and Language Therapy Team. There will be an expectation for clinical audit, as well as contribution to the wider inpatient clinical governance agenda. The post provides excellent opportunities for ongoing personal and professional development

The successful cand.idate will be accountable to the Dietetic and Speech Therapy Service manager and the Head of Therapies for Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Part time applicants would be considered and there may be a longer-term opportunity for part time working in a job sharing capacity.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a full time, fixed term post as Team lead for the adult Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) Team. The team lead provides operational management and professional leadership to facilitate a streamlined service to inpatients within the Trust. The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner providing highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy services on the adult acute wards, including critical care, with the expectation that they may be required to provide assistance on the stroke and slow-stream rehabilitation units.

The post holder will work directly with the Dietetic and Speech Therapy service manager and team lead for dietetics, to maintain and improve operational efficiency and effectiveness, optimise the use of resources and respond to changes in service need. The post holder will work collaboratively with other clinical leads throughout the trust.

The post holder will be expected to manage their caseload independently, as well as providing second opinions and specialist advice for junior staff. Second opinions may include highly specialist competence in the field of critical care, Videofluoroscopy, FEES and tracheostomy.  They will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure specialist assessment and management plans are in place for their caseload. The post holder will be expected to contribute to collaborative working with patients, carers and colleagues, the voluntary sector and Social Services in regard to the planning and delivery of care.

The post holder will provide clinical and non-clinical support, education, appraisals, supervision and leadership to junior, senior and unqualified staff members. They will lead on team meetings, working parties and contribute to departmental / team audits. They will ensure effective and holistic patient management and support with the implementation of effective care plans, as well as enable joint service development.

They will deliver training/ education on a regular basis within the hospital setting to SLTs, other professionals, patients and carers regarding all aspects of swallowing, speech and communication. They will contribute to training and support of junior and senior staff members.

Criteria

Essential criteria
  • Current HCPC registration
  • Current RCSLT registration
  • Post graduate training relevant to the post eg: Clinical skills training, clinical supervision, critical care, stroke, neurology, ENT
  • Extensive clinical experience of a wide range of complex swallowing and communication disorders within the adult population
  • Extensive experience with complex decision-making regarding eating and drinking with acknowledged risks / end of life care within the adult population
Desirable criteria
  • Experience providing operational service delivery and staff management
