Job overview
Croydon University Hospital hosts a busy gastroenterology service providing a large range of endoscopic services (including fluoroscopic procedures, Capsule Endoscopy, Balloon Enteroscopy, EMR and ESD).
More than 10,000 patients are seen each year with 9900 upper and lower GI endoscopies being performed in a JAG accredited endoscopy unit. A further 250 ERCPs and 200 other therapeutic procedures are performed in the nearby X-ray department.
It is expected that the incumbent will be experienced in gastroenterology and upper and lower GI endoscopy. They will be expected to participate in the general medical on-call, as well as a regional second on-call GI bleed rota.
There is a dedicated 28 bed gastroenterology ward. The successful appointment will participate in a 1:5 consultant of the week model delivering inpatient care.
Main duties of the job
The Gastroenterology Department is staffed by 5 full time Consultants, 2 Associate Specialists,
The Gastroenterology department works closely alongside the Endoscopy Unit at Croydon University Hospital, which has an excellent nursing workforce and is proud to be JAG accredited. The Endoscopy Unit has 4 procedure rooms, with ERCP and other interventional work undertaken in the nearby X-ray department. The department is leading in the region with Endoscopic Submuscoal Dissection/Resection.
An Endoscopic ultrasound service is provided once a week for Croydon patients at St George’s Hospital by a CHS Gastroenterology consultant, with long-term plans to repatriate this activity to our Endoscopy Unit.
There are 3 advanced therapeutic endoscopy lists a week in radiology, in which balloon dilatations, stents, feeding tubes and ERCPs are delivered. The Endoscopy Unit also undertakes double balloon endoscopy with an anaesthetist in attendance.
Planned service improvements include the introduction of Oesophageal pH monitoring/manometry and Endoscopic Ultrasound to be done locally.
Gastroenterology outpatient clinics (General Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Hepatology) are held on the main Croydon University Hospital site and Purley War Memorial Hospital, serving North and South Croydon patients, respectively.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake 2 outpatient clinics per week. The gastroenterology outpatient clinics are for review of ward discharges and assessment of new GP referrals both at Croydon University Hospital and Purley War Memorial Hospital. The job plan also includes two endoscopy lists every week.
The post holder will be expected to participate in the consultant of the week model and deliver inpatient care. The post holder will have on call commitments and be a participant on the General and Acute Medicine (GIM) consultant rota. The department also operates a 1:7 second on call GI bleed rota and the post holder will be a participant on this rota.
