Speciality Doctor for Psychiatrist Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

This is an established post within the Rehabilitation & High Support Directorate (RHSD) covering a 10 bedded male PICU.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide the routine medical and psychiatric care to 10 male patients on Walkerwood unit. This will involve taking the initial histories, regularly reviewing the patients’ mental state and physical health, writing prescriptions, collecting and compiling information from other sources re: previous psychiatric history, medication history, and risk events.
  • Attend weekly ward rounds, contribute to the multi-disciplinary review of the patients, take notes and document on the electronic recording system PARIS . 
  • Prepare admission summaries and discharge summaries no less than 1 week following discharge, and referral letters to other specialists as and when required.
  • Under supervision prepare psychiatric reports for Hospital Managers’ Hearings and Tribunals. Depending on experience the post holder can expect to represent the Responsible Clinician at Hospital Managers’ Hearings and less frequently Tribunals.

Working for our organisation

The Trust is seeking a full time speciality doctor to join Psychiatry Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Walkerwood  at Tameside General Hospital, Ashton-u-Lyne. This is an established post. We are recruiting as our existing doctor is taking retirement.  

Walkerwood  provides intensive care to acutely unwell male patients. This facility accommodates 10 male patients between the age of 18 - 65 yrs. By the nature of this facility, it is expected that the patients admitted to PICU will be acutely unwell with potentially aggressive and challenging behaviors.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

It is envisaged that the post holder will work ten programmed activities over five days. Following appointment there will be a meeting at no later than three months with the Clinical Manager to review and revise the job plan and objectives of the post holder. The overall split of the programmed activities is 7.5 to be devoted to direct clinical care and 2.5 to supporting professional activities (as per the Royal College of Psychiatrists recommendation). The timetable is indicative only. A formal job plan will be agreed between the post holder and Associate Medical Director or Clinical Manager three months after commencing the post and at least annually thereafter.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Additional clinical qualifications.

ELIGIBILITY

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
Desirable criteria
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

TRANSPORT

Desirable criteria
  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.

CLINICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Candidate shall have at least four years full-time postgraduate experience two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty doctor in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
  • Working extensively in multi-disciplinary teams in general adult psychiatry at basic trainee level.
  • Experience of doing general on-call duties in general adult psychiatry.
Desirable criteria
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
  • Experience in PICU/Rehabilitation/Forensic Psychiatry

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable people and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
