Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced cardiac nurse to develop their career and leadership skills to deliver the highest quality nursing care to patients undergoing interventional cardiac procedures.

The post holder will work on Ward 1 caring for patients pre and post cardiac interventional procedures, in the Cardiac Catheter Lab leading and assisting with cardiac interventional procedures , in the Cardiac Pre-Op Clinic and in the Dobutamine Stress Echo Clinic. 

As a Sister/Charge Nurse you will provide daily clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and support staff in the delivery of evidence based practice. You will actively support the Ward Manager and Cath Lab Manager in the effective running of the department including in their absence. You will play a key role in the education, supervision and assessment of all learners and junior staff.

The successful candidate would be expected to participate in the 24/7 out of hours on call service and be prepared to work flexible shifts including weekends and bank holidays. 

Main duties of the job

You will rotate through all areas, Ward 1, Cardiac Catheter Lab, Cardiac Pre-Op Clinic and Dobutamine Stress echo Clinic. 

On the Ward you will be the  Nurse-in-Charge, where you will be responsible for the coordination of the running of the shift. 

In the Cardiac Catheter Lab you will be the Nurse-in-Charge, where you will be responsible for the coordination of the running of the shift and will be second operator during lab procedures. 

You will mainly work Monday-Friday between the hours of 08:00-20:45, but may be required to work weekends and bank holidays. 

You will be required to take part in a 24/7 on-call rota.

You will have extensive knowledge and experience in cardiology and Cath Lab and an enthusiasm for your own and others learning and development, playing a key role leading in the education, development, supervision and assessment of all learners and unregistered staff. 

You will  be an ALS provider or have a willingness to complete ALS certification and will provide leadership in the management of emergency situations. 

You will be a team player, reliable, have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to manage workload in a fast-paced environment, be caring and respectful to all service users and colleagues. 

You will support the senior team in the achievement of clinical governance requirements, participate in audits and strive for continuous quality improvement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communications and Relationships

·       You will display excellent communication skills to deliver complex and sensitive information, lifestyle and post procedure care to service users.

·       To agree the arrangements for communication with the patient/family/carer, and to document these in accordance with Trust policy and the patients right to confidentiality.

·       To ensure that essential information on the patients’ condition and progress is recorded by self and team members appropriately according to NMC guidelines.

·       Actively participate in ward and professional group meetings.

·       Challenge behaviours and practices consistently and at the time of observation, leading this in a respectful and professional manner.

 

Analytical and Judgmental Skills

·       To undertake data collection effectively using the agreed system.

·       To utilise the appropriate judgemental skills when assessing and advising patients and relatives in crisis situations. Escalating early to the hospital senior and bed management team any issues that will delay discharge or requiring a patient to stay overnight.

·       Complete audits and checklists as required.

 

Administrative Responsibilities

·       To be responsible for the implementation and for the ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of the planned care and ensure that accurate and meaningful nursing records are maintained.

·       To be responsible for daily administrative requirements that arise during a shift.

 

Policy and Service Development

·       You will contribute to the development of services within the Integrated Cardiology Unit through quality improvement strategies. 

·       You will complete audits and utilise clinical audit research, supervision, practice and teaching as well as monitoring and improving standards of care.

·       You will contribute to the development and completion of nursing competencies.

·       You will contribute to the ongoing update of nursing care plans, patient information and evidence based policy.

 

Financial Responsibility

·       To ensure optimum, efficient and effective use of human and departmental resources.

·       To report breakdowns or malfunctions of equipment immediately and complete the relevant documents to minimise disruption to the service.

·       To monitor, control, order and store supplies/material resources according to the requirements and specifications of the clinical environment, considering any changes in the needs of the department.

·       To identify any problems with the use or availability of resources and make recommendations for corrective actions which are consistent with organisational policies and department objectives.

·       To ensure patient’s valuables and belongings are managed according to Trust policy.

·       To maintain appropriate, accurate and up to date records of resource use.

·       To assist in the control and use of medications and procedure equipment by monitoring and maintaining stock levels.

 

Planning and Organisational Skills

·       To prioritise care requirements for identified patients.

·       To assist in the management and organisation of workload, adjusting plans/rotas to cover emergencies.

·       To organise and monitor the work and performance of junior colleagues providing constructive feedback, advice and ongoing support.

·       To monitor progress of work recognising changing priorities and implement corrective actions within own limits and informing the relevant people.

 

Leadership and Management

·       Support the Ward and Cath Lab manager with nursing rotas, allocation, supervision and coordination of clinically based teams.

·       To lead the ward/Cath Lab shift in the coordination of the patient list, allocation, breaks, work load and resources.

·       To confidently lead any clinical emergencies that may arise, escalating issues timely and appropriately and feeding back to the team.

·       To lead a nursing team providing timely appraisals and welcome back heath reviews, ensuring that development plans are consistent with their team objectives and action plans are followed through.

·       To communicate clearly with your nursing team members, providing them with the opportunities to contribute to the planning and organisation of work.

·       To identify, report and address poor performance issues.

·       To diffuse challenging behaviour, ensuring that the situation is managed in a sensitive way.

·       To contribute to the recruitment and selection process.

·       To actively contribute to the identification of future workforce planning/training/competency requirements.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree/Diploma in nursing studies.
  • Cardiac Care module or evidence of continued professional development in Cardiology
Desirable criteria
  • ALS certification
  • Mentorship or previous evidence of mentoring learners.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of ECG interpretation skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrates evidence based clinical knowledge.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial years experience within Cardiology/Cardiac Cath Lab

  • Experienced in PCI, pacing and devices.
