This post is not suitable for doctors specialising in Orthopaedic Surgery. 

PLEASE NOTE: This is not an orthopaedic surgical job hence surgical experience is not  essential. (This is  a medical registrar position in the field of orthogeriatric in trauma and orthopaedics)

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Orthogeriatric Team within the Directorate of Trauma and Orthopaedics at North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH). The team is led by the Consultant Ortho- geriatrician.

The post will be based on the Trauma wards at NMGH and will allow the successful candidate to develop a special interest. We currently provide a 5 day service with no on call commitments.

As well as providing clinical expertise on the ward, you will be working along side the Trauma and Orthopaedic Directorate to help and enhance our service.

You clinical duties will include:

  • Ensuring patients are seen by an Ortho-geriatrician within 72 hours of admission.
  • Seeing unwell adult patients as requested by the Orthopaedic Team.
  • Attending multidisciplinary team meetings and board rounds.
  • Working with the specialist nurse for inpatient osteoporosis to arrange investigations and treatments. 
  • Supporting the consultant in bone health assessment clinic

Please note the post holder will attain the title of medical registrar expected to handle acute medical emergencies and proceed with comprehensive geriatric /medical assessment of the assessed patients.

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a valid License to practice

Medical Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary medical qualification (eg. MB ChB or equivalent)
  • Minimum of satisfactory 2-year clinical NHS working experience (at a medical SHO/medical registrar level) in general medicine
  • Demonstrable active engagement in acute medical rota
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent
  • Candidates with MRCP part 1/MRCP part 2 /PACES pending full completion
  • CCT Geriatric Medicine or equivalent

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Broad Knowledge & Clinical Expertise in: a) Acute Medicine b) Geriatric Medicine
  • Ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team (e.g. surgeons, nurses, therapists)
  • Up to date knowledge of a) Osteoporosis b) Falls Prevention c) National Hip Fracture Database d) Best Practice Tariff e) Acute Medical Emergencies
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working on an Acute Medical Ward caring for older patients.
  • Independently able to handle acute medical emergencies
  • Proof of engagement in acute medical rota handling medical acuity /acute medical emergencies in acute medical take at a senior medical SHO or medical registrar level
  • Comprehensive geriatric /medical assessment of the acutely medically unwell patients
Desirable criteria
  • Working on a Rehabilitation Ward
  • Completed Quality Improvement / Audit Cycles
  • Clinical Governance including Incident Reporting

Academic, Research Skills, Teaching, Management

Essential criteria
  • Use of evidence based practice
  • Information technology skills (e.g. e-mail, word processing & some spreadsheet skills)

Essential criteria
  • The applicant must demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour, i.e integrity, honesty, confidentiality, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013)
