An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of a Band 7 Cognitive Behavioural Therapist for Psychosis within the Wigan Early Intervention Service. The team works with individuals aged 14 - 65 years and their families who are experiencing a First Episode Psychosis. In the role, you will work alongside our Senior Psychological Therapist, CBTp Therapists and Assistant Psychologist.  The role will primarily involve providing NICE concordant CBTp to clients with psychosis and other complex needs. 

Training will be provided in the Meriden model of Behavioural Family Therapy for families/service users experiencing psychosis.  The role also provides opportunity to support others in the model through consultation and supervision.

The post holder will help to facilitate the Continuing Professional Development of the team through case discussion and training. This will be with support from the psychological therapists in the team. There will also be regular opportunities for personal CPD.

The service has good links with local programmes and the regional CBTp training centre and is supportive of research and development. 

Clinical supervision will be provided by a Senior Psychological Therapist with BABCP accreditation.

Applicants currently enrolled/undertaking training on the Postgraduate Diploma in CBT for Psychosis and Bipolar disorder pathway will be considered.

The role is advertised at 22.5 hours per week however 30 hours per week can be offered

The post holder will be responsible for providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis, working with individuals aged between 14 -65 experiencing first episode psychosis. 

The postholder will be part of a multi-disciplinary team for mental health services and, as such, will work within its co-ordinated framework. 

The postholder will work within the procedures, protocols and guidelines for the Service. 

The postholder will plan and organise their work schedule and tasks, having managerial and clinical supervision as the role demands.

The post holder is primarily responsible for providing assessment/therapies (particularly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp) and Family Interventions) to people experiencing psychosis related difficulties in receipt of a service from the Wigan / Leigh Early Intervention Team.

Although the post holder will be primarily responsible for providing psychological input to individual clients, they will function as an integral member of the service’s multi-disciplinary team, and will on occasion support care coordination, crisis management and other tasks that will support us to provide the best possible service to our clients.

In conjunction with other psychological therapists working within the service, the post holder will contribute as appropriate to the provision of individual and group evidenced based interventions.

The post holder will contribute to the supervision and development of other staff.

The post holder will work within the policies, procedures and guidelines for the Wigan / Leigh Directorate and the Early Intervention Service.

The post holder will plan and organise their work schedule and tasks within the parameters of the Job Plan agreed with the Team Manager.

Education / Qualifications

  • A registered qualification in health care at graduate level in nursing, social work, or allied health profession and training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis (completed or currently undertaking)

  • CBTp supervisor training.
  • Evidence of having completed HEE-funded CBTp ‘top-up’ training.
  • Full accreditation with BABCP

Experience -

  • • Demonstrable experience of working with clients with psychosis.
  • • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • • Ability to demonstrate the application of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in clinical work.
  • • Ability to work as an autonomous therapist.
  • • Experience of delivering clinical supervision.
  • • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of service users across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • • Ability to work with service users presenting with complex psychological difficulties, including psychosis, bipolar and personality disorder.

  • • Experience of working with young people with psychosis and their families, or working in an EI or EDIT ‘at risk’ mental state service

  • • Extensive clinical knowledge of serious mental illness / psychosis and the application of cognitive behavioural therapy or other relevant form of psychological therapy to this client group

  • • Experience in the use of psychosis-specific structured and semi-structured interviews (e.g. PANSS; PSYRATS)

  • • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical &/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.

  • • Ability to identify training needs and deliver training to all grades of staff using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations in public, professional and academic settings.
  • • Ability to measures and assess clinical outcomes.
  • • Ability to evaluate the clinical efficacy of cognitive behavioural intervention and other relevant psychological therapies.
