We have one Band 6 vacancy within our Integrated Mental Health & Substance Misuse Team at HMP Garth.

The successful applicants will assist in the overall delivery of care to patients within the mental health and clinical substance misuse team of HMP Garth.

You will be responsible for the care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care for mental health and clinical substance misuse.

The successful applicant is required to demonstrate a “can- do” attitude, be resilient and possess excellent leadership qualities.

Healthcare services operate 7 days a week and the successful applicants would need to be flexible in their approach to meeting the demands of the service.

The successful candidate will assist the Team  Manager and Senior Management to lead and develop a team of healthcare staff and visiting professionals.

They will work towards providing the highest standard of care for the prison population ensuring consistent and effective nursing practice as well as operational activity.

 

Main duties of the job

  • To lead and manage  referrals into the service , arrange assessments, prioritise Crisis intervention.
  •  Prioritise and organise teams workload.
  • Provide expert clinical leadership to the team, ensuring delivery of effective clinical expertise and advice to the team, including the provision direction and participation.
  • To manage and take responsibility for a defined caseload and ensure full compliance with the CPA, Safeguarding, Vulnerable Adults and other policies at all times.
  • To ensure a culture of care is evident within the  team where clinical staff enable and empower service users.
  • Provide professional supervision and management supervision to an agreed number of nurses within the team.
  • Provide expert support to nurses in:-
    • Completing needs assessment to service users.
    • In risk assessment and management.
    • In crisis planning and management.
    • In assessing and responding to patient/ carer’s needs.
    • In care planning and review of care plans.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Use advanced expertise and knowledge to take on management of the most complex cases and advise/supervise junior staff on their caseload and assessments.
  •  Manage and carry out continuing responsibility for a defined caseload of allocated patients.

  •  Represent Integrated mental health and clinical substance misuse team in appropriate meetings / forums.
  •  Contribute and lead on existing systems within the team, such as CPA
  •  Provide robust mental health/risk assessment and safety planning
  • Provide clinical and professional supervision for Band 5 nurses
  • Contribute to line management, achievement of training, audit, MDT strategic approach
  • Provide cover for the lead nurses in their absence
  •  Build and maintain positive working relationships with the wider partnerships teams within the establishment

Person specification

Essential & Desirable

Essential criteria
  • Current NMC registration RMN
  • Knowledge of current NHS agenda and clinical governance relevant to practice.
  • Detailed knowledge of dual diagnosis (MH and Substance Misuse)
  • Awareness of current offender health issues
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership and Management Development training
  • RCGP certificate in Substance Misuse
  • Knowledge of dual diagnosis
  • Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice.

Essential & Desirable

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of current NHS agenda and clinical governance relevant to practice.
  • Evidence of having developed clinical practice and continued professional development.
  • Demonstrable experience in chosen clinical area at Band 5 or Band 6 level
  • Experience of managing and leading teams, with evidence of managing change and/or difficult situations.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of working with service users who demonstrate a range of complex needs
  • Experience of developing policies and protocols.
  • Experience of working in offender health or custodial environment.
  • Experience of working in a forensic setting.
