Automation Specialist (Genomics)

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time permanent automation specialist (genomics)to join the North-West Genomic Laboratory Hub (NW GLH) at the Liverpool site (part Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT)) and be part of one of the largest Acute Trusts in the UK, employing over 20,000 staff..

The NW GLH is one of 7 GLHs recently created as part of a national reorganisation to provide a national genomic medicine service. It is a highly regarded, UKAS accredited, NHS clinical service provider of Genomics to a population of 7.2 million people in the North-West of England as well as a wide range of national and international specialist referrals.

The post holder should have knowledge and experience in developing and validating genomic instrumentation/equipment alongside integration with laboratory information systems.

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

·        The post holder will, using specialist expertise in automation development participate (liquid handling and assay robotics), plan, and work as part of a formal programme. 

  • The post holder  will develop and implement instrument Integration and LIMS Integrations: 

·        Management of equipment and staff as required.

·        To prepare validation documentation and standard operating procedures to support the transition of automation methods from development into diagnostic service.

·        To apply highly specialist automation technical skills and expertise in diagnostic laboratory, to develop, validate and implement automation and instrument integrations into diagnostic practice.

·        With the support of their managers and colleagues, to input into design validation experiments specific to the automation, technology and instruments undergoing evaluation.

·        To collaborate and support technical staff in undertaking automation, instrument integrations and validation work.

·        To critically appraise automation, instruments and integrations for broader outcomes from validation.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc at a least 2(i) in an appropriate scientific subject
Desirable criteria
  • PhD in the field of genomics/genetics (or equivalent)

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Specialist expertise in relevant laboratory automation and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge and experience of LIMS and other laboratory IT systems
  • Knowledge and experience of automation and robotic liquid handling
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of standard file formats such as XML, CSV and JSON
  • Proven experience in laboratory automation of complex protocols and methods
  • Able to concentrate at all times and work under pressure
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of the programming of robotic liquid handling
  • Experience in research and development in a relevant field
  • Familiarity with technology-rich lab environments
  • Management experience
  • Experience in genomic assay validation and verification
  • Knowledge and experience of automation and robotic liquid handling
  • Knowledge of principles of clinical laboratory genetics (in area of expertise)
  • Able to critically analyse and interpret scientific data
