Job overview

                    Be responsible for the management of the unit in the absence of the Intensive Care Lead Nurse.

                    Deputise for the Intensive Care Lead Nurse as and when required.

                    Provide professional leadership and support.

                    Act as an expert practitioner in critical care

                    Lead and actively promote practice and educational development at ward/departmental level.

                    Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

                    Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources.

Main duties of the job

·         Establish and maintain effective communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters overcoming any problems in communication.

·         Develop knowledge and practice in Intensive Care.

·         Promote best practice in health, safety, and security.

·         Contribute to the development of services.

·         Improve quality.

·         Promote people's equality, diversity, and rights.

·         Assess people’s health and wellbeing needs when those needs are complex and change across the caseload.

·         Plan, deliver and evaluate programmes to address patient's complex and changing health and wellbeing needs.

·         Lead work teams in the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice

·         Allocate, coordinate, monitor and assess the work of teams and individuals.

·         Maintain and support the efficient use of physical and /or financial resources.

·         To provide support and care for the patient and his/her family respecting their need for privacy and dignity.

This vacancy is open to those who have a current NMC PIN to practice as an Registered Nurse or Midwife in the UK, or those who are currently enrolled on a course which means they expect to receive their full NMC PIN within the next 3 months. Please note an NMC PRN PIN is not a full NMC PIN and would not fulfil the essential criteria for this role.

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Registration with NMC
  • ILS
  • Post-basic qualification to minimum degree level or equivalent experience
  • Post basic qualification in Critical Care
  • Recognised Teaching qualification
  • Evidence of having undertaken relevant further study or training as the post requires, including Step 4 competency document.
  • Substantial post registration experience in the speciality, with knowledge and clinical expertise.
  • Extensive experience of working at Band 6, managing a team on a shift-by-shift basis.
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised management or leadership qualification

  • Good communication skills with patients, families, and colleagues
  • Able to motivate others and promote team cohesion.
  • Able to deal with the governance agenda, including, complaints, incidents, and risk assessments.
  • Willingness to undertake further relevant study as required for the post.
  • IT literate
  • Budgetary control awareness.

  • Able to work collaboratively with other disciplines and departments
  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of audit and research experience.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of HR policies and procedures, including experience of recruitment and selection of staff.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the broader local and national health care context.
