Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and dynamic nurses to join our colorectal  nursing team in the role of  Colorectal Triage Nurse .

 This exciting opportunity aims to facilitate faster diagnosis for patients on a 28 day pathway, providing care and support for patients on suspected cancer pathways. 

 This role is suitable for someone with  colorectal and/or general surgical experience who are looking to further specialise and develop their careers.

 The posts requires a unique individual who can work alongside our nursing and medical colleagues in both the surgical department and cancer services. Training and support will be provided. 

 You will have a clear understanding of the surgical nursing, cancer pathways, and be committed to improving patient experience. You will also be committed to the development of specialist nursing practice and demonstrate evidence of ongoing professional and academic development.

Main duties of the job

Triage patients referred onto the suspected colorectal cancer pathway (TWR / 28 day pathway) with support of senior colleagues, policies and protocols

Support the faster diagnosis and improve outcomes for patients with suspected colorectal cancer by organising appropriate investigations

Support the directorate management and cancer services department by liaising with patients to ensure their diagnostic pathway remains timely 

As appropriate review and act on results of investigations, within the post holders scope of practice

Improve patient experience by ensuring effective communication and being a point of contact within the colorectal team

You will be the main point of contact for patients referred onto the suspected colorectal cancer pathway/Two-week rule

Escalate concerns or results to senior colleagues that are outside the nurses current scope of practice

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be the point of contact for patients referred onto the colorectal suspected cancer pathway/Two-Week Rule. Main duties of the role are:

  • Triage patients referred onto the suspected colorectal cancer pathway (TWR / 28 day pathway)
  • Support faster diagnosis and improve outcomes for patients with suspected colorectal cancer by organising appropriate investigations
  • Review and action on results of investigations, within the post holders scope of practice
  • Improve patient experience by ensuring effective communication and being a point of contact within the colorectal team
  • Escalate concerns or results to senior colleagues that are outside the nurses current scope of practice 

The successful candidate will work alongside the colorectal team and cancer services to support and facilitate faster diagnosis for patients on a suspected cancer pathway. Full support alongside our colorectal Nursing team will be offered throughout. The post requires individuals who can work alongside our nursing and medical colleagues in surgery and cancer services, the successful candidates must be able to work autonomously once confident to do so. The successful candidate will complete telephone clinics.

  • Degree in Nursing / healthcare
Desirable criteria
  • MSc Nursing / Healthcare
  • Clinical Examination Skills

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Valid NMC Registration

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience working within the colorectal field
  • Sage and Thyme training
  • Evidence of post graduate study relevant to role
  • Willingness to complete study applicable to role
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced communication skills training
  • NHS England - Telephone assessment for Colorectal STT

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Autonomous decision making – judgement capability
  • Evidence of high level analytical and judgement skills
  • Evidence of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Sound knowledge of national and local targets in relation to the Suspected LGI Cancer Pathway / Straight to Test
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines / clinic capacity
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with patients and all members of the MDT

  • Evidence of undertaking a quality improvement project and sharing results
  • Evidence of problem-solving capabilities / skills
