Senior Clinical Fellow in Simulation - Intensive Care Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

We wish to appoint a senior clinical fellow to commence in post from August 2024 for a 6 month fixed term  period, based at The Royal Oldham Hospital ICU.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to undertake a simulation senior clinical fellow role in intensive care medicine.

The post is ideal for candidates who have finished core training in anaesthesia or ACCS and wish to gain experience in intensive care while considering career options

This job role will be 50% simulation and 50% clinical. The successful candidate will provide support to the delivery of the intensive care department simulation and postgraduate medical education simulation programmes. In addition the successful candidate will complement existing services through the provision of specialist knowledge and expertise in intensive care medicine and will be part of the intensive care clinical team, taking part in the resident on-call rota (under senior supervision) of the intensive care unit.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join the senior medical tier rota. The role will involve reviewing patients within the intensive care unit, formulating a management plan, and presenting to the consultant responsible for the unit on the daily ward round as well as assessing and stabilising critically ill patients outside ITU.  You will have responsibility for carrying out the plan following the day’s morning ward round and reviewing any changes to patients’ conditions during the day. You will gain experience of carrying out practical procedures such as central venous catheter insertion and arterial line insertion as well as experience of induction of anaesthesia and airway management in critically ill patients in a well supervised and supportive environment.

Within simulation, the senior clinical fellow will work closely with the simulation leads in developing and delivering high quality simulation education, through developing simulation scenarios, delivering simulation sessions in-situ on the intensive care unit and working on simulation projects. The intensive care unit has its own Sim Man 3G patient simulator. This will involve development of simulation across the clinical care pathway for the entire multidisciplinary team.

Senior clinical fellows will take part in the monthly departmental teaching program and will have the opportunity to undertake audit and clinical governance activity to improve their CV for future specialist training applications.
