Job overview

Emergency services are receiving increasing volumes of calls for individuals presenting with acute mental health issues in the community. A significant proportion of emergency services resource is being used to support individuals struggling with their mental health, who often present with complex issues that require further assessment and ongoing support. The Mental Health Urgent Triage Team (MHUT) are a joint partnership between Pennine Care Foundation Trust, NWAS and GMP, in addition to this we are providing Senior Mental Health practitioners to work with NWAS practitioners in a Mental Health joint response car, attending the scene where a caller has been identified as being in Mental Health crisis. You will work from the clinical hub in NWAS and will have training in the use of the EOC software systems. 

Main duties of the job

The service will provide urgent triage of service users’ mental health needs in the community, as an effective alternative to existing mental health crisis pathways available to emergency services. Service users will be supported to access the right care at the right time by the right professional in the least restrictive way, reducing system pressures across emergency services, emergency departments and health-based places of safety. Working in partnership will further form and strengthen working relationships between partner agencies and staff on the frontline, sharing experiences, education and insight into available local support resources for mutual service users. The postholder will provide clinical expertise and triage at the scene, working closely alongside colleagues across mental health services within Pennine Care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To work in the community attending 999 calls and using clinical expertise to appropriately outcome these in the best interests of the patient and demands of emergency services.
  • Substantial experience and confidence in the assessment and appropriate management of risk.
  • To work alongside the MHUT as part of the MHJRV service to provide an effective and efficient response to referrals from GMP and NWAS.
  • To support service users to access the right care at the right time in the least restrictive way, reducing system pressures across emergency services, our locality EDs and S136 suites.
  • To provide urgent response to mental health related 999 calls using assessment, formulation and decision making skills to ascertain risk, self defined crisis and next steps.
  • To complete mental health assessments following triage for those presenting with acute mental health needs.
  • To strengthen working relationships between agencies on the front line providing mutual education and sharing insight into available local resource and support for local services users.
  • To provide advice in the management of complex cases for our NWAS and GMP colleagues.
  • The postholder must have a sound clinical knowledge and substantial experience of working in a secondary mental health care setting.

Person specification

Education/qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Mental Nurse compliant with requirements for NMC registration
  • Post graduate diploma, or equivalent experience in acute mental health assessment, risk assessment, multiagency working.
  • Evidence of continued CPD in the field of acute mental health, urgent, crisis care.
  • Evidence of working with people living with personality disorders.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of STORM training and our trauma informed care
  • Master’s degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience at Band 6 or above.
  • Post registration experience of working in adult acute mental health services
  • Evidence of post registration training / development.
  • Effective team working within a multi-agency framework
  • Demonstrate experience of problem-solving approaches
  • Audit and research practices relevant to clinical area
  • Experience of working autonomously with people whom are in mental health crisis and a risk to self and others
  • Evidence based and experience of reflective practice
  • Experience working in traumatic, challenging, distressing environments where you may encounter barriers to understanding
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in assessment for all ages.
  • Experience in management of complaints/ compliments.
