Research Clinical Psychologist / Research Trial Manager

Band 7

Job overview

The RAPID Trial, funded by the National Institute for Health Research’s Health Technology Assessment programme, is a 38 month randomised controlled trial, led by Professor Tony Morrison, which builds on our track record of collaborative research on psychological interventions for people with psychosis and other serious mental health problems, by evaluating the possible benefits of 2 remotely delivered, brief psychosocial interventions. It will compare a safety planning intervention delivered by assistant psychologists with a semi-structured peer support intervention designed to help people manage suicidal thoughts. All interventions will be compared with treatment as usual from a home-based treatment team. We will conduct this research across 5 areas in the UK (Manchester, East London, Glasgow, North East London and Oxford).

The Talking With Voices Trial is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation Programme. Talking With Voices is a 34-month multisite study, led by Dr Eleanor Longden and Professor Tony Morrison, which also builds on our track record of collaborative research on psychological interventions for people with psychosis and other serious mental health problems through evaluating the possible benefits of a dialogical intervention for reducing the impact of distressing voices compared with treatment as usual. We will conduct this research across 4 areas in the UK (Manchester, London, Newcastle, and Oxford).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of a team responsible for the systems, processes and structures required to coordinate these trials and ensuring that the research undertaken meets the requirements of the Research Governance Framework and relevant legislation. The post holder will be involved in the training and clinical supervision of the research assistants across sites and will also deliver the voice dialoguing intervention (approximately 1 day per week). The post holder will have line management and supervisory responsibility for approximately 5.0wte members of staff.

The successful candidate will have excellent clinical, administrative and organisational abilities, experience of trial management, a thorough knowledge of research governance and an understanding of mental health research in NHS settings. They will have a clinical psychology qualification (DClinPsy). The post will be predominantly based at Rico House (M25), but will involve travel around the UK.
