Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratories at  Pathology at Wigan and Salford (PAWS)  apart of the Northern Care Alliance.  Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated individuals with experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science to join our team. Working across a range of sections you will receive full support and development through training and gain experience in specialist areas.

The Central Service Laboratory at Salford Royal Hospital also serves the  sites of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. PAWS also has Laboratories at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary and Wrightington Hsopital.

Main duties of the job

You will be working with state-of-the-art equipment including  Siemens Advia 2120i FBC automation, IL TOP 550 and the department is currently going though an equipment refresh and you will be working with  Sysmex XN 9000 FBC automation, CN serivce Coaguation automation, GeneXpert PCR, Bio-Rad Variant HPLC equipment and Ortho Vision automated blood group serology. Blood transfusion practice includes Electronic Issue, and a patient blood management programme is in place to support anaemia management. The department is fully computerised with Telepath.  2024 will see the replacement of all Haematology automated equipment and a new LIMS installed. 

The philosophy of the laboratory is to promote best practice and provide high quality services. The department is approved by the HCPC for training to state registration and is UKAS accredited (ISO 15189). CPD and further study is encouraged and supported. Band 5 staff automatically progress to Band 6 on successful completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma and 3 year post registration experience.

Essential criteria
  • HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with IBMS accredited Honours Degree or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist Diploma

Skill and Knowledge

  • Awareness of confidentiality issues.
  • Awareness of health and safety issues.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience in Haematology &/or Blood Transfusion
  • Holds a valid current registration
  • Work within a UK laboratory before
Desirable criteria

  • Blood film morphology experience
