The Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences based at Salford Royal Hospital, part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Locum Consultant Neurosurgeon specialising in Neurosurgical Spinal Surgery  to join our established and successful Neurosurgery Department.

Salford Royal has one of the strongest track records of providing excellent patient care services and was only the second Trust in the country to earn an overall rating of ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission for a second time.

We are looking for an outstanding individual to join this busy and successful service to enable us to continue to provide the highest quality care to our patients. Drive, flexibility and team working skills are all essential attributes.

You must be able to demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to work cohesively as part of a multidisciplinary team. To be eligible for consideration you must be on the GMC Specialist Register or a Specialist Registrar within six months of your CCST date at the interview date.

Prospective candidates are expected to have completed a formal Fellowship in Complex Spine at a recognised institution or additional equivalent experience in this field.

Main duties of the job

The Department of Neurosurgery at Salford Royal Hospital is one of the busiest in the United Kingdom, with outstanding clinical care given to patients across the range of neurosurgical subspecialties.  The department has a high throughput of complex and non-complex work covering the vascular, skull base, functional, oncology and spinal specialties. Salford Royal has recently been granted accreditation as Surgical Spine Centre of Excellence by Eurospine.

This post will augment the existing This post will augment the existing neurosurgical department, which is made up of 23 Consultant Neurosurgeons, 5 Specialty Doctors, Specialist Registrars, Junior Doctors and Allied Healthcare Professionals.

This new post is to facilitate the development of the Complex Spinal Surgery services in the region. Salford Royal has a large and expanding Complex Spinal Surgery department and the successful applicant will become a key member of this service.

The Neurosurgical department has recently begun operating at Rochdale Infirmary, the NCAs GIRFT accredited surgical hub. The applicant will be expected to support the department’s development of this service.

It is expected that the successful candidate will support the on-going development of the Neurosurgery Department, supporting with Service Improvement as appropriate.

Registration/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Completion of CCST/ higher specialist training or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners
  • Inclusion on the specialist register / Admission to the register within 6 months of interview

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical experience and expertise in Neurosurgery
  • Demonstrable evidence of an interest in Complex Spinal Surgery
  • Completed a formal Fellowship in Complex Spine at a recognised institution or additional equivalent experience in this field.
  • Completion of a recognised Spinal Fellowship
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Consultant Experience
