Staff Nurse - Band 5

Band 5

Job overview

You will be expected to:

  • Plan the delivery of patient care and take responsibility for implementing and evaluating that care, using an appropriate nursing model.
  • Carry out nursing care to the highest possible standard according to Trust Policies and Practice and Clinical Guidelines. This requires a thorough understanding of policies and guidance related to for example: infection control, hygiene and individualised patient needs.
  • Provide advice and education to patients, staff and learners within the directorate as required.
  • Develop communication networks across specialities and throughout  the multidisciplinary team.
  • Prioritise your own workload and of those working with you such as learners and Healthcare Assistants. When in charge of the ward know how to delegate what staff to what duties and ensure the smooth running of the ward.
  • Administer patient medication according to Trust Policy, this
includes the administration of intravenous medication.

L4 is a 24 bedded, mixed gender, acute general medical ward. We usually see a high turn over of patients as we get acutely unwell admissions from A&E/ EAU. As a Band 5 nurse, it will be your responsibility to care for these patients and perform clinical duties to help improve their health until they can be discharged.

Main duties of the job

You will take responsibility for the care of your patient workload, this involves admitting them to the ward and treating them for the illness they have presented with.

At times, you may be expected to co-ordinate the shift as nurse in charge if you are the most senior nurse on shift. This will require good communication and leadership skills as well as confidence in decision making.

You must work with the healthcare assistants on the ward to ensure all patients are cared for in a dignified manner i.e ensuring personal care is carried out.
