Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to make a full time appointment for a consultant psychiatrist to work in the well-established Mental Health Liaison Team based at Stepping Hill Hospital. This is a substantive appointment. The appointee will have a lead role in consolidating the developments that have occurred within this service recently helping the service continue to develop in order to meet the ‘Core 24’ standards defined by the Department of Health.

Main duties of the job

These include clinical, liaison, educational, managerial and service evaluation roles. Clinical work will include assessment and interventions with patients in the Acute Trust and involve working with an expanding multidisciplinary liaison mental health team. The team will promote the development of skills in this area within the Acute Trust and pathway development.

The post holder will join the existing consultant liaison psychiatrists and liaison mental health team with the aim of improving the standard of care provided to acute Trust patients. There will be close links with the liaison mental health developments across both Pennine Care and Greater Manchester.

This is an exciting time to join the Trust and there are opportunities to contribute to the organisations’ development including service redesign involving more integrated models of person centred care for our local community. Stockport has a very strong teaching commitment and the post holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of both mental health and non-mental health staff.  There are close links to ongoing research projects within the service and academic links are encouraged.

Service/Ward/Department Summary:

Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to make a full time appointment for a consultant psychiatrist to work in the well-established Mental Health Liaison Team based at Stepping Hill Hospital. This is a substantive appointment. The appointee will have a lead role in consolidating the developments that have occurred within this service recently helping the service continue to develop in order to meet the ‘Core 24’ standards defined by the Department of Health.

The out of hours on call frequency is low (1 in 13) with some second tier cover and 1 day off in lieu.

Key Requirements of the Person Specification:

The post holder needs excellent knowledge and experience of assessing and providing mental health interventions for people with physical health problems. The post is suitable for those with a CCT in adult psychiatry or a dual CCT in adult and old age psychiatry and experience of working in an acute hospital setting.  An endorsement in liaison psychiatry is desirable but not essential. Applications are welcome from those who want to work part time.

Applicants must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion or be within six months’ of the anticipated award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Adult Psychiatry, or a dual CCT a/a, at the time of interview for the post.

You will have relevant professional qualifications in line with ‘Essential’ elements of the Person Specification, and a CV demonstrating a wide range of ‘Essential’ and ‘Desirable’ skills in terms of qualifications, clinical skills, knowledge and experience as well as academic skills and lifelong learning all detailed in the attached job description.

Person specification

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • MBChB or equivalent
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • to practise at the time of appointment. Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
  • MRCPsych
Desirable criteria
  • Degree, such as Msc or MD

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Good Interpersonal and team working skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Knowledge of relevant requirements and legislation such as The Mental Health Act, Care Programme Approach etc
  • Be Section 12 and AC Approved or within the next 3 months
Desirable criteria
  • An additional area of relevant special interest
  • Actively involved in continuing professional development
