Job overview
This post is based the department of Diabetes and Endocrinology supporting the work of the Directorate in delivering inpatient services and participating in speciality outpatient clinics in Diabetes and Endocrinology. The post provides training and experience in specialty diabetes clinic such as antenatal diabetes care, insulin pumps (CSII), community diabetes care, diabetic foot care, paediatric to adult diabetes transition clinics etc. and general adult endocrinology including access to specialist endocrinology via pituitary MDT at Salford Royal Hospital and opportunities to sit in on paediatric diabetes clinics.
The inpatient department provides an exciting opportunity to develop high quality skills in Inpatient Diabetes management and Endocrine Dynamic function testing.
The Integrated Diabetes Department works closely with 2 diabetes specialist nurses allocated for Inpatient care, and a nurse educator. The inpatient DSNs work closely with 3 other DSN colleagues mainly based in the community.
Stockport benefits from a dual trained Diabetes Midwife/ DSN who is a national champion for Diabetes and pregnancy care and like the rest of the team is Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII) trained.
The department operates a consultant of the week model for inpatient ward cover.
We are also about to start an exciting collaboration with East Cheshire to provide support inpatient support and endocrine clinics.
Main duties of the job
You will be an enthusiastic educator and be expected to participate in teaching and mentoring of junior clinicians and students.
A mentor and supervise the training of junior medical staff on the team in conjunction with the other consultant physicians in the department.
Jointly manage with the other consultants in the department patients admitted to the medical ward base.
Provide specialist in reach to the Acute Medical Unit and see diabetes and endocrinology in patient referrals.
Competently assess and manage new and follow up patients in diabetes and endocrine clinics.
Provide diabetes advice and clinical care to the diabetes antenatal service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Candidates will participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
Participate in regular departmental audit and help with/develop a research program.
Work towards models of integrated care with primary health care providers.
Participation in the General Medical on-call service.
Contribute to the ongoing service developments to meet the changing demands on the speciality.
In general, it is anticipated that the consultant will provide medical leadership and professional accountability for the patients on under his/her care
Work within the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective team working in the provision of acute care to patients.

- If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £41.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary

Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Qualification MBChB
- MRCP
- CCST or its equivalent or within 6 months at interview in General Internal Medicine and Diabetes and Endocrinology
Desirable criteria
- MD or PhD

- Senior Registrar / Specialty Trainee in General Internal Medicine & Diabetes & Endocrinology
Experience
Essential criteria
- A broad training which demonstrates appropriate experience in and a positive attitude towards Diabetes and Endocrinology
- Comprehensive patient management
- Experience in and commitment to post graduate and undergraduate education
Desirable criteria
- Extensive experience in diabetes technologies, diabetes antenatal care, young adult diabetes, diabetic foot disease.
- Evidence of training in teaching skills
Personal skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to form good professional relationships with all departments and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Experience of supervision of junior medical staff and relevant staff in other disciplines’ staff
