An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Physiotherapist to join the well-established Wirral Integrated Respiratory Service. 

The Wirral Integrated Respiratory Service is a team made up of Specialist Nurses, Assistant Practitioners, Clinical Support Workers, Physiotherapists, Exercise Physiologists, Physiotherapist assistants and administration staff who all strive to work collaboratively to deliver the best respiratory care for patients on the Wirral. The service delivers early supported discharge and admission avoidance for COPD patients, chronic disease management, pulmonary rehabilitation and a home oxygen service for all oxygen patients on the Wirral. 

This role will focus on delivering Pulmonary Rehabilitation in the Acute Hospital and around the community. 

 

Main duties of the job

Perform appropriate holistic assessment of patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate a treatment plan  according to changing health care needs.

Management of patients discharged from hospital with acute exacerbation of COPD in their own homes with a view to expanding into other respiratory conditions in the future

Provide education to support respiratory patients in management of their COPD to include breathlessness management and sputum clearance

Use clinical skills and knowledge to identify changes in patients’ condition that require intervention and take appropriate action including referral to other professionals/services.

Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to on-going care needs.

Identify opportunities to promote and provide health education for patients and carers

Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Support the holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for patients referred to the Wirral Integrated Respiratory Service

Practice autonomously and demonstrate evidence based decision making

Provide expert advice and clinical practice across all areas of the service

Develop advanced clinical skills in history taking, clinical examination and assessment

Participate in pulmonary rehabilitation programmes providing expert advice to patients

Participate in the education and development of other staff members.

Work collaboratively and cooperatively with clinical colleagues to develop services and quality of care delivered.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Physiotherapy, or a physiotherapy qualification of an equivalent level recognised by Health Professions Council eg. MCSP, Grad dip phys
  • State Registration (HPC)
  • Significant post qualification experience
  • Post qualification study in Respiratory field or equivalent experience

  • Relevant specialist post registration training / study, and/or experience in specialist area

  • Ability to work as an autonomous clinician, managing own caseload, time, using clinical reasoning and analytical skills to perform appropriate assessment, identify problems/ diagnoses. Making decisions and judgements on appropriate treatment modalities and evaluating the effectiveness of treatment.
  • To demonstrate a good awareness of the needs of patients and take appropriate action in the event of a patient becoming acutely unwell
  • Possess analytical and judgement skills required to assess and diagnose complex patient conditions within respiratory knowledge base, being able to work autonomously and escalate to senior if required
  • Be an active leader and contributor to service development in a frequently changing environment
Desirable criteria
  • Highly developed respiratory examination skills
  • Experience of supervision for less experienced staff
