Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Psychologist to join the SARC at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. This is a full-time, permanent position.

The Clinical Psychology Team supporting the SARC is a small team consisting of one Lead Clinical Psychologist and one Clinical Psychologist. The SARC sits within Safeguarding and Statutory Services which includes a wider team of Paediatricians, Specialist Nurses, Psychologists, Managers, HCAs, and Administrators.

The paediatric SARC at the Rainbow Centre is available for all children under the age of 16 from across Merseyside who have experienced sexual abuse (recent or non-recent). We are looking for a Clinical Psychologist with strong clinical skills and experience relevant to working with children and young people. The successful candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills and personal qualities which will support them to work with children and young people who may be in acute distress or be from a diverse range of backgrounds.

They must be able to communicate effectively with a range of professionals, including the Police, Social Care, Education and the Voluntary Sector. Experience of research and facilitating service developments is beneficial. The successful applicant will access clinical supervision from a Senior Clinical Psychologist in the Trust, and will have opportunities for ongoing personal and professional development.

The Clinical Psychologist for the Paediatric Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) provides highly specialist psychological assessment to children and young people, who have been or are suspected to have been experienced sexual abuse.

This role includes:

  • Offering advice and consultation on the psychological care of children and families to non-psychologist colleagues in health, social care, education, and other agencies.
  • Being clinically responsible for complex therapeutic, and risk management work with clients who are often highly vulnerable and at risk, and who sometimes present with risk to self and others.
  • Undertaking work autonomously within the professional guidelines and overall framework of the services policies and procedures.
  • Utilising research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the service.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology as accredited by the BPS. Eligibility to be registered with HCPC as a practitioner psychologist.

  • Additional training and qualificatiions in psychological therapies, research methodology and /or other fields of applied psychology.

Experience

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and their families across the full range of care settings. Experience of working with a wide variety of child mental health problems, across the whole age range, reflecting all levels of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems and verbal and physical abuse. Experience of assessing and managing risk to self. Experience of working with complex family dynamics and experience of appropriately responding to complex safeguarding issues in order to protect individuals. Experience of working collaboratively with MDTs and external agencies (e.g. police, social care). Experience of working autonomously and managing own workload balance

  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision. Experience of the application of specialist mental health assessment and therapeutic interventions of in different cultural contexts.

Knowledge

  • Doctoral knowledge of clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, and two or more distinct psychological therapies. Doctoral level knowledge of research, methodology, research design and complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology. Knowledge and experience of working with people who have experienced sexual abuse, relational trauma, developmental trauma and attachment difficulties.

  • High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised therapies/interventions

  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration. Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to children and young people, their families, carers and other professional colleagues within and outside the NHS. Strong interpersonal skills to supportive effective working in highly sensitive, complex and emotive situations and with people from a range of backgrounds.
