Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.
We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview
Are you a highly motivated band 5 dietitian with a desire to move into paediatrics? We are looking for an enthusiastic dietitian with excellent organisation and team working skills to take on this newly created role. This post would be ideal for anyone who has a desire to work in paediatrics but has none or very limited experience.
The post will initially be at band 5 level but once you have completed a competency- based training programme you will progress to become a permanent band 6 and enter into our rotational programme. You will be responsible for managing your own case load of patients with support from the wider team of specialist dietitians.
Ideally the successful candidate will have had band 5 experience in either adult or paediatrics including enteral feeding but we will consider newly qualified dietitians with clinical placement paediatric experience. We would also consider appointing at band 6 level if you can demonstrate significant paediatric experience.
Main duties of the job
- To provide specialist dietetic services to identified paediatric sub-specialities within the Trust. This includes nutritional assessment, development and implementation of care plans and on-going review of complex in- patients and out-patients.
- To develop and implement evidence-based protocols, standards of care and patient education information within identified areas of paediatric sub specialities.
- To work in liaison with the advanced specialist dietitians in more complex paediatric sub specialities in the provision of service and the development and implementation of protocols, standards of care and patient education information.
Working for our organisation
At Alder Hey we are a team of over 20 dietitians and 3 assistants. We provide dietetic care across the majority of paediatric sub-specialities including, Gastroenterology, Diabetes, Respiratory, Nephrology, Cardiology and many more. We are well respected across the Trust for our commitment to clinical dietetics and nutrition support and have excellent multi-disciplinary teams. We are a very supportive team and take seriously the development of paediatric dietitians. In addition to learning through clinical caseload management and clinical supervision there are wide ranging learning opportunities across the Trust and participation in the Masters programme in paediatric dietetics will be actively encouraged. We also have P1 and 2 placement students and there will be opportunities to be involved in their supervision.

Essential criteria
- Desire to work with children
- Previous experience of working at band 5 or paediatric experience
- Experience of MDT working
- Good communication skills
- Practical or theoretical knowledge of nutritional requirements and anthropometry in children
Desirable criteria
- Student training experience
- Experience at band 6 level
- Behaviour change or motivational interviewing experience
- Experience of delivering teaching.
