Job overview

The Community Paediatric Dietetic Department at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust invites applications from dietitians with some paediatric experience or an interest in paediatrics.  This B6 role can be offered as a B5 to B6 training post depending on experience .

This role will  involve working as part of the specialist eating disorder and ARFID service and covering the in-patient Tier 4 children's mental health unit at Alder Hey. This dietetic team sits within the wider Community Paediatric Dietetic service in the Community and Mental Health division at Alder Hey.  This role provide the opportunity to work as part of a  friendly team, consisting of B7's, B6's and dietetic assistant colleagues where you will have the opportunity to utilise your paediatric dietetic knowledge and skills across a wide range of clinical conditions within a specialist community service. 

You will deliver the service predominantly through clinics, group education sessions and inpatient work, where you could encounter a wide range of clinical conditions requiring dietetic intervention. There is also going to be a newly created day case unit for supporting children and young people with eating disorders which the dietetic team will be part of.  

 We are committed to continuous professional development and support opportunities to facilitate this such as attending relevant courses and receiving product update training. 

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist dietetic services to community patients and their families across Liverpool & Sefton. This includes nutritional assessment, development and implementation of care plans and on-going review of paediatric patients.
  • To provide dietetic management for highly complex paediatric patients with clinical supervision from the specialist dietitians.
  • To contribute to the development and implementation of evidence based protocols, standards of care and patient education information within identified areas of paediatric sub specialities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Accept clinical responsibility for the dietetic caseload management of patients and organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities
  2. Undertake assessment of nutritional status, nutritional requirements and expected outcome of complex patients taking into account clinical, social and cultural factors
  3. Analyse and interpret the complex, multiple components of the medical, nutritional and clinical dietetic assessments and make a judgement from a range of clinical options on how this information contributes to the formulation of a diagnosis and a resultant treatment care plan
  4. Plan and implement dietetic intervention based on the result of the nutritional assessment to achieve the expected outcome

Person specification

Oral and written communication skills

Essential criteria
  • Registered Dietitian with HCPC
  • Evidence of post registration experience
  • Evidence of oral and written communication skills in a breadth of clinical settings
  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in Nutrition and Dietetics
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable post registration experience in clinical paediatric dietetics at Band 6 level or in a rotational band 5 role
  • ommencement of validated postregistration training in paediatric dietetics preferably at Masters level
