Job overview

This is a full time (10 PA’s) post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine.

Start date June 2025 (other start dates by negotiation).

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual for this post within the Paediatric Respiratory Medicine team at Alder Hey Hospital which will provide specialist respiratory training.  Along with other team members you will provide both secondary and tertiary respiratory care to children within the region. The post would suit trainees wishing to expand their knowledge of paediatric respiratory medicine either pre or post CCT.

This is a full-time (40 hours), fixed-term post working within the Respiratory Team at Alder Hey Hospital. The successful applicant will have opportunity to increase their knowledge of tertiary respiratory medicine, and to improve upon practical skills such as paediatric bronchoscopy. The role will be predominantly providing out-patient care to patient’s with simple and complex respiratory disorders and working within the newly created multidisciplinary asthma service. The role will not involve general paediatrics and there is no on-call commitment. This post does not have educational approval from the Mersey Post-Graduate Deanery for speciality registrar training.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties

 The main responsibilities of the clinical fellow are to work within the team providing outpatient management to children with respiratory disorders, both general respiratory and complex respiratory disorders.

Out-patient duties

The out-patient duties will comprise of 4 clinics each week, and dedicated time will be given for clinic preparation and administration. The clinical fellow will contribute to consultant led clinics in a supervised capacity and also contribute to the weekly SpR led clinic. Clinics will include general respiratory medicine where both secondary and tertiary level patients are seen and sleep/long-term ventilation clincis. The fellow will also have the opportunity to attend specialist clinics such as sleep, PCD, BPD, neurodisability, sickle cell, congenital thoracic malformations, immunodeficiency clinic where respiratory complications arising from these disorders are reviewed and managed.

 In-patient duties

The majority of the children who are under our care are admitted to the medical specialities ward. However, many children are admitted to other wards including the general medical ward, High Dependency and Intensive Care Units. We also provide input to patients of other specialities such as ENT, surgery, neurology and oncology. Our team provides the regional flexible bronchoscopy service for children. Bronchoscopy is conducted as a day case procedure for most standard-risk children in a dedicated weekly  The Clinical Fellow will:

Main Duties

 

Clinical

 

The main responsibilities of the clinical fellow are to work within the team providing outpatient management to children with respiratory disorders, both general respiratory and complex respiratory disorders.

 

There will also be some work managing in-patients along with the 3 – 5 FTE middle-grade trainees and 1-2 FTE ST1-2 level speciality doctors.

 

There will opportunity to gain expertise in specific areas of respiratory medicine and this can be discussed with the successful candidate.

The Clinical Fellow will:

  • share duties with the other respiratory registrars in reviewing and guiding management in these children and communicating with their families and other involved clinicians. These children are complex and often medically unstable.
  • provide an initial assessment of new respiratory referrals from other specialist services within and outside the hospital, and then discuss the referral and initial management plan with the attending consultant
  • assist with co-ordination of bronchoscopy list and have the opportunity to train in bronchoscopy technique if appropriate to the post-holder’s training needs.

 

The in-patient responsibilities include supervision of the more junior doctors in maintaining safe and effective care for children.
