We provide specialist services in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, respiratory medicine including adult cystic fibrosis and diagnostic imaging, both in the hospital and out in the community.

We serve a catchment area of 2.8 million people, spanning Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man, and increasingly we receive referrals from outside these areas for highly specialised services such as aortics.

Heart and lung disease continue to be amongst the biggest killers in the UK and the communities we serve are marked by increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease, higher levels of heart failure, hypertension, coronary artery disease and an ageing population.

Our reputation for strong performance is important in delivering the best care for our patients and high quality clinical services. This is underpinned by a culture of research and innovation, delivered in modern estate and facilitated by technology. New and upgraded clinical areas are designed with patients and families fully involved to deliver their needs.

Job overview

We seek enthusiastic and experienced Clinical Perfusion Scientists to take on leadership roles within our perfusion team at LHCH. These newly established posts offer an exciting opportunity to shape and develop the department, driving innovation and development within the team and the wider cardiac surgery service.

There are four Lead Clinical Perfusionist roles, each with the flexibility to define specific areas of responsibility in collaboration with the Clinical Perfusion Manager. Suggested areas include, service development, training and education, research and audit, or safety.  Candidates are also encouraged to pitch their own ideas, making this a unique opportunity to shape the roles to reflect their strengths. These positions provide the opportunity to own key aspects of the service, fostering expertise, collaboration, and innovation. Working alongside the Clinical Perfusion Manager, the Lead Clinical Perfusionists will provide professional leadership and support the operational management of the Perfusion Department. Together, they will ensure efficient and effective resource utilisation while upholding the highest patient care and service delivery standards.

This role offers payment towards relocation expenses, subject to the relocation policy.

The position includes participation in an on-call rota, and the successful applicants must hold full registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.

Main duties of the job

The Lead Clinical Perfusionists will work with the Clinical Perfusion Manager to develop perfusion services that align with the Trust’s short- and long-term goals. They will also lead their own service delivery projects, contributing to the department's strategic development.

The Lead Clinical Perfusionist must also be an experienced autonomous practitioner who will be responsible for cardiopulmonary bypass procedures in adults undergoing a range of cardiac and aortic surgery. All accountabilities are in addition to what would be expected of a Senior Clinical Perfusionist.

The post holder will balance their time between clinical, administrative, and managerial responsibilities as needed, ensuring that service delivery targets are consistently met while maintaining the highest standards of care.

Working for our organisation

LHCH serves a catchment area of 2.8 million people, spanning Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man and specialise in a wide range of adult cardiac surgeries, performing over 2,000 procedures annually across six operating theatres. It is an exciting time to join the Surgery Division at LHCH with a new cardiothoracic theatre opening later in 2025.

Our reputation for strong performance is important in delivering the best care for our patients and high-quality clinical services. This is underpinned by a culture of research and innovation delivered in a modern estate and our encouragement of flexible working in various forms.
