Job overview
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Transfusion Practitioner to join our team at LUFT. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced healthcare professional to play a key role in optimizing blood transfusion practices, ensuring the safe and effective use of blood products, and providing expert guidance to clinical teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for improving patient care through education, audits, and the development of transfusion policies, while promoting best practices in transfusion medicine.
Main duties of the job
- Provide expert clinical advice on the safe and appropriate use of blood and blood products to healthcare professionals across the Trust.
- Lead the delivery of training and educational programs, ensuring that all clinical staff are equipped with up-to-date knowledge of transfusion practices and protocols.
- Contribute to the development and review of transfusion policies, guidelines, and best practices, ensuring alignment with national standards.
- Monitor, audit, and evaluate transfusion practices, providing feedback to improve clinical outcomes and patient safety.
- Investigate adverse transfusion reactions and lead on ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes, including optimising the use of blood products in patient care.
- Provide leadership in continuous improvement initiatives related to blood transfusion services.
- Support the implementation of new transfusion technologies and innovations within clinical practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Understand and promote the requirements for Better Blood Transfusion, Safer Practice Notices, and other blood and blood component transfusion guidelines and regulations.
To assess current practice and implement change where necessary to meet these standards.
To educate and advise clinical staff on transfusion guidelines and appropriate, safe transfusion practice promoting effective safe use of blood and blood components.
To lead the development of training programmes for all clinical staff involved in the transfusion process.
Investigate and report transfusion incidents and reactions in accordance with national and local policies
Promote and support effective communication systems between the clinical staff and the blood bank laboratory.
To work with the Blood Bank Laboratory to maintain complete ‘cold chain’ and traceability for all blood products.
To remain up-to-date in blood and blood component transfusion evidence-based practice and national regulations.
To act as a role model of excellence in providing professional care.
Where necessary, to contribute to the management of patients receiving blood and blood component transfusions.
To provide expert advice, support and education to staff involved in the blood and blood component transfusion process
Where required, to assist healthcare professionals to develop appropriate plans of care for individual patients.
To collaboratively identify areas for practice development.
To develop protocols for use of blood and blood products in collaboration with the Consultant Haematologist and the Blood Bank Laboratory Manager.
To ensure on-going accuracy of the Trust’s Blood Transfusion Policy, both in terms of clinical practice and regulatory requirements
To assist in the provision of information on blood and blood component use and expenditure to Trust departments.
To assist in the cost effective use of blood components and ensuring participation in related audits of practice in relation to blood and component use.
To promote the accurate and immediate investigation of all incidents related to blood and blood components in collaboration with Blood Transfusion Manager and the Trust Transfusion Team.
To participate as a key member of the Trust Transfusion Committee and Hospital Transfusion Team.
To assist with the coordination of the Hospital Transfusion Committee and provide administrative assistance as agreed.
To deputise for Chair of the Trust Transfusion committee and represent the committee at other relevant Hospital Committees, including the Risk Management committee; and to provide reports as appropriate 3.
To work in partnership with multidisciplinary colleagues

- Degree or equivalent in healthcare related subject
- Registered Healthcare Professional
- Haematology Specialist module Teaching & Assessing in Clinical Practice
Desirable criteria
- PGCE or equivalent
- Certificate in Transfusion Nursing
- Teaching qualification (ENB 998 Teaching & Assessing in Clinical Practice or Mentorship Practice for Health Professional)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial post registration experience, which includes working at a senior level at band 6 or equivalent, within a multidisciplinary team
- Experience of teaching
- Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team

- Proven experience of formulating protocols and standards
